GM’s history. Part of the modern ACDelco first joined GM in 1909 as a division known as Champion Ignition. Founded by Albert Champion, it bore the name “AC Spark Plug Company” in 1922 and “AC Spark Plug Division” in 1933. The Delco name comes from the “Dayton Engineering Laboratories Company,” founded in 1911.

In 1916 Champion Ignition joined United Motors with several other small companies GM had purchased at the time. When GM initially formed United Motors, it operated independently of its parent and sold to all manufacturers. This changed in 1918 when GM fully acquired the company and renamed them to the United Motors Services, Inc. As an official part of GM, they specialized in the production of GM automotive parts intended solely for GM vehicles. UMS became a division in 1944, and, years later, in 1960, its name changed again, this time to United Delco. The Delco name was common to consumers since it was used in all of the divisions’ branches, like Delco Packard for example. In 1974 the AC Spark Plug Division and United Delco merged into AC-Delco. In 1995 ACDelco rebranded itself into the company we know today, dropping the hyphen in its name and adding a new logo, amongst other marketing initiatives.

ACDelco currently offers an inventory of over 90,000 OEM and aftermarket replacement parts and is an internationally known brand. They offer many kinds of integral parts, such as air filters, ball joints, blower motors, spark plug wires, water pumps, wheel bearings, and more. Their parts have earned a place in history with components in Charles Lindbergh’s trans-Atlantic flight and the engines in Apollo 11’s 1969 space mission to the moon. As a contributor to GM since its early beginnings, ACDelco creates both OEM parts for GM and aftermarket parts for other vehicles, and has established itself as a leading contributor of parts in the automotive world.
