Now, I'm gonna disconnect the battery. Use an 8-millimeter wrench. Loosen up the negative side terminal and just set that wire aside. Take this cover off. Use an 8-millimeter socket and slide it off. Take this snorkel off. There's a little retainer right here. Just use a trim tool, slide that off, then loosen up the worm clamp here. Use an 8-millimeter socket or you can use a straight blade screwdriver. Same with this one. Grab the snorkel, slide it back, and slide it out.

Now, we're gonna loosen up the tensioner. Just take a 15-millimeter belt tool or you could use a 15-millimeter socket. Loosen the belt up and just slide the belt off the idler pulley right there. Release the tension on the tensioner. Move belt out of the way. Disconnect the connector right here, this little tab. Just slide up on the tab. Slide it out. And disconnect this wire. Take this boot off. Use a 10-millimeter wrench. Loosen up the nut and take the nut off and remove the wire, set it aside, and just put the nut back on there. And take these two bolts out. I'm gonna use a 15-millimeter socket. And slide those both out. Then you can take a pry bar. Just get underneath and just pry it up. Just be careful, you don't wanna break these ears. If you pry it back and forth, you could potentially break these off. So, just try to pry up. And just rock it back and forth, but don't grab it. Pull it that way. And there we go. Slide it out.
Now, very carefully, you do not wanna break these tabs off. I'm just gonna take a punch and a hammer and just right here, just gonna try to go with this angle and try to just hit it a little bit, see if you can get this sleeve to move forward a little bit. You don't really wanna hit it with a hammer like that. Just be cautious, try not to break it. That's gonna give us a little more room so when you put the new alternator in, it'll slide in a little easier. Now, take the alternator and just slide it in position. Take the bolts and line the bolts up. And same with this bolt. Now, I'm gonna torque these bolts to 37 foot-pounds. And take the terminal and I'm just gonna use a wire brush to just clean this up a little bit. You could use a little sandpaper or emery cloth. And take this nut off. Get the terminal on, put the nut back on. And torque this to 80 inch-pounds. That's good. Put the cover back on. That's good. Connect the connector. And take the serpentine belt, go over the pulley. Make sure the other pulleys are all lined up.

If your belt fell off, you may be able to find a key underneath the hood that tells which way the belt goes. This vehicle, this is the root of the belt. Goes around the crank, the adjuster, the water pump, power steering pump, alternator, and the idler pulley. All right. Put the tool back on the tensioner, get the belt ready and take the tension off and slide it underneath the idler. And, if you struggle a little bit, you might have to get a little more tension. There we go. Double-check. Make sure all the pulleys are good. Looks good. And take the snorkel, line it up. Throw it over the intake, over the throttle body. Line this bracket up right here and over the airbox, the mass air flow sensor. Tighten up this worm clamp right here. Just snug. And then same right here. Take the cover, line the cover up in the back and get the bolt started, and tighten it up. Snug. Now, let's reconnect the battery. Put the negative terminal on and snug it up. And then wiggle it, make sure it's not loose and you're good to go.

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the alternator in this 2005 GMC Savana 2500 with the 6-liter V8 engine. The tools you're going to need for this are a 10mm and a 15mm socket and ratchet, a flat blade screwdriver, and a pry bar.

The first thing that you're going to want to do is remove your negative cable from the battery. Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen up that bolt and pull the cable off the battery.

Now you want to remove these two 10mm bolts that secure the air intake box, and we'll fast-forward as he does this. Now disconnect the harness to the air intake box and set it aside. Then you want to use a flat blade screwdriver to loosen up this clamp. With the clamp loosened up, you should be able to lift and pull out your air intake box. Now, using a flat blade screwdriver, loosen up the clamp on this part of the air intake. Once that's loosened up, you should be able to pull that up and out.

Now you want to remove your radiator overflow bottle. Just remove the 10mm bolt that holds it in place, and then it will lift up and pull out, and you want to just set that aside. Now that you can see the serpentine belt, you want to use a 15mm socket and ratchet and place in on the tensioner pulley. You want to push that down and loosen up the belt. You'll be able to pull it off the alternator.

There are two 15mm bolts on the front of the alternator and you want to remove those. We'll fast-forward as he does that. Now to get the alternator out (it is in there pretty good), you want to use a pry bar. Pry up underneath it and eventually it will break free from there. See, he's got that side; walk around to the other side. Pry up that side. Once it's up and out of there, pull it out, and then on the back you'll see that there is a little rubber cover. What you want to do is you want to pull back that cover, and there's a 10mm bolt under there, as you can see right there. We'll fast-forward as he removes that.

Now you want to lift that wire up and off of your alternator, and then pry up that harness right there. You want to start by putting that wire back on, so pull back the rubber cap there and replace the wire, replace that nut, and we'll fast-forward as he tightens that up.

Next thing you want to do, you want to take the harness and plug it back into place on the alternator. To put your alternator into position, you want to push down one end and then try to swing and hit the other end down in. To help out, you can see he's using a flat blade screwdriver in the hole to try and pry it downwards a little bit. With enough moving around, eventually you will get it into a spot where you can actually get a bolt in there. It does take a little bit of time, but it will go.

Once you get one bolt in there, you can now pry from that side and it will line up the hole on the other side so you can push that bolt in as well. We'll fast-forward as he tightens those bolts up. Here's the belt diagram for the van. I included this just in case, if for some reason the belt slips off one of these pulleys, you know what order it goes in. You know if it goes above it or below it. It kind of helps out. You can use this as a reference point if you need it.

Now, with the belt in place, you want to put that 15mm socket on the tensioner. You want to push down on that, and that will allow you to align the belt on all of the pulleys. Make sure you have it place, and then you want to tighten the tensioner back up. Now take that part of your intake and put it back down. Put it into position and use a flat blade screwdriver to tighten up the clamp.

Now you can reinstall your air intake box. You can see there are two holes there. They line up with the two pegs on the van and you want to feed that down in there. Get it into position, and then, using a flat blade screwdriver you want to tighten up that clamp where it connects. You can see there he actually loosened the part of the intake he put in before this.

He loosened it up so he could angle it and push this part down. Then you want to tighten both those clamps back up if you have to do that. We'll fast-forward here. You want to put in those 10mm bolts that secure the air intake box and reconnect the harness. Then you want to realign your radiator overflow bottle. Put it into position and replace the 10mm bolt in that. Now you can reconnect your negative cable back to your battery.

Okay, friends, one of the first things we need to do is remove our negative battery terminal from the battery. Go ahead and use your 8-millimeter and get it right off of there. Set that away so there's no way it can contact the terminal on the battery. If you were to look right down here, you're gonna see a clamp. If you were to look at the other end where it connects onto the throttle body, you're gonna see another clamp. You'd go ahead and loosen those up. Also, if you come right up here, you're gonna see an 8-millimeter bolt. If you loosen that up, you can take this right out. Once you have that out of the way, and the clamps are loosened, you can wiggle this around. I'm gonna draw it off of the throttle body right here and I'm gonna come right there, take it off of right here, remove it from the vehicle.

So, now that we have the intake and the little shell out of the way here, it gives us a nice, clear view. You don't necessarily need to take off the shell, but I just like to have it out of the way. Go ahead and relieve your tension like that. And then I'm just gonna take the belt off of the idler pulley here and then I can let go of that. We'll get our serpentine belt tool right out of the way. Let's go ahead and remove the belt. All right. Now that we've got the belts out of the way, let's go ahead and grab onto this little rubber boot on the backside of the alternator here, and it's gonna expose a 10-millimeter nut. Remove that nut and pull this wire aside. Carefully set this aside. Now we're gonna get this clip off of here. It's gonna have a little flippy-do that you're gonna grab with your finger, pull it away, and lift it up. There it is right there. I pulled on it and then I lifted this right out. Now, we're gonna remove our two mounting bolts that hold the alternator to the bracket. Next, we're gonna use a nice long pry bar. I'm gonna come in between the bracket and the alternator, see if I can pry it up and out of here.

There it is, friends. We're gonna spray down these two areas right here with some penetrant spray. To install the new alternator, these are gonna have to be moved. Get a nice little hammer and bonk on these from the backside towards the front. Carefully take your alternator, rest it down inside this area. You should notice it falls right in nice and easy. The reason for that is because we push these ears towards the front of the vehicle. If you didn't, you're gonna have an issue getting the alternator in. Take your two bolts, start on both in before you tighten either of them down.

You'll notice as you start tightening this down, that piece that you bonked from the back towards the front is gonna start moving to press up against the alternator. There we are. Okay. Once they're bottomed out, just go ahead and give it a teeny bit more. Now, if you were to grab onto that wire, you removed off the backside of that alternator, you're gonna notice it needs to be cleaned up more than likely. You definitely don't wanna have it full of gunk and debris in a way that it's gonna cause some sort of issue where you won't be able to charge your battery from your alternator. Carefully clean it up.

Take the new nut off the back of your alternator. Put your nice clean end on the alternator and then go ahead and put on the nut. Make sure you tighten it down. Okay. The stud that comes out of the alternator, as you can tell is a very small stud. So, you don't necessarily need to have a lot of pressure holding the nut that holds the wire, okay? You don't wanna break off that stud cause then you need to get yourself a new alternator. Go ahead and put that boot back on there. That's super important because you don't want anything to ground out against there. Next, we're gonna grab the wiring for this. There it is. Click it right in. Give it a nice tug. Make sure it's completely secured. Go ahead and take one side, go down and around the passenger side of the water pump, which is this right here, and then put it over the crank, which is the main pulley over there. I'm just gonna circle it, put it up, then slide it around.

I'm gonna take one and I'm gonna come up and over the tensioner right here and then the other side, I'm gonna bring it down and around the water pump and then underneath the power steering pump, it's gonna fit right inside the ribs perfectly. And we're gonna come up, make sure it's sitting in those ribs. There it is. Come up and over the alternator right here, this looks good. Make sure everything's situated approximately where it needs to be. That looks great. I'm gonna grab my tensioner tool. Get on there. Relieve tension. Now we'll take this, bring it right underneath the idler pulley. This is your idler pulley. Get our tool off. Give it a nice tug and then, of course, double-check all of your pulleys. Every one of them has the rib side that goes up against the belt, you need to make sure it's sitting perfectly inside the ribs.

If you're wondering what your belt routing should look like, you can find it right on the front. Get our air intake back on here. I'm just gonna go right underneath this hose here. Line it up there. Grab this. Slide it in, push it all the way in so it's up against the whole throttle body. Make sure your clamps are nice and tight. Your hose over here should have a little clippy-do. Ours is actually broken, but it's gonna push in right there and that'll hold it secure. Put this cover back on here, just slide it all the way back so it's sitting inside the pitons. Put this down and tighten up your bolt. It's time to reconnect the battery. Make sure it's secure and this cannot move around.
