Tapered Bearings explained

Tapered bearings use rollers shaped like flat-topped cones and two races (spherical ball bearings between two straight rings) angled from the outside to the inside of the bearing. The greater the angle, the more axial load the bearing can handle.

Tapered bearings handle cornering forces exerted on the bearing during cornering (known as axial load) better for trucks and large cars.  Vehicles for this listing, came from the factory with tapered bearings.  Roller ball bearings work well for smaller cars, but replacing a tapered bearing with a roller ball bearing will result in increased wear and faster failure.

How to Replace Wheel Bearing & Hub 99-06 Chevy Silverado 1500

Learn how to replace your own wheel hubs on your 00-06 Chevy Silverado or Suburban or GMC Sierra or Yukon. In this video, the expert mechanics at 1A Auto will show you how to replace a hub that's vibrating, groaning or loose.

  1. step 1 : Removing the Wheel
    • Loosen the lug nut covers with a 22mm socket
    • Pry off the center cap with a flat blade screwdriver
    • Loosen the lug nuts with the vehicle on the ground
    • Raise the vehicle with a floor jack
    • Secure the vehicle on jack stands
    • Remove the lug nuts
    • Pull off the wheel
  2. step 2 : Removing the Caliper Bracket
    • Remove the T55 Torx bolts from the caliper
    • Use either a C-clamp to squeeze the caliper to push the caliper piston in
    • Remove the caliper
    • Pry the brake pads off with a flat blade screwdriver
    • Use a piece of pipe and ratchet to remove two 18mm bolts from the caliper bracket
    • Slide the rotor off

  3. For the third step, if you do not have air tools you can either loosen the center hub nut before you take your brakes apart by having somebody hold the brakes, or you can use a large bar, put it between the lug studs to hold it, and break the bar.

    step 3 : Removing the Hub
    • Disconnect the ABS harness from the frame and steering spindle by removing the clips
    • Pry off the center hub cap using a flat blade screw driver and hammer
    • Remove the 36mm center hub nut with an impact wrench and air blow gun
    • Remove the three 15mm hub bolts with two 15mm wrenches
    • Twist the hub nut a quarter of the way
    • And hammer from the back of the hub
    • Remove the hub nut and pull the hub out
  4. step 4 : Installing the New Hub
    • Place the backing plate onto the hub
    • Push the hub back into place
    • Insert and tighten the 15mm hub bolts
    • Torque the 15mm hub bolts to 75 ft/lbs
    • Remove the clip and feed the ABS harness back into place
    • Replace the clips and brackets to the ABS harness
    • Replace center hub nut and washer
    • Tighten the center hub nut
  5. step 5 : Replacing the Caliper Bracket
    • Place the rotor on the hub
    • Twist a lug nut to hold the rotor in place
    • Put the caliper on
    • Replace and tighten the 18mm bolts
    • Torque the 18mm bolts to 75 ft/lbs
    • Install the new brake pads into the bracket, tapping lightly with a hammer
    • Grease the caliper bolts
    • Place the caliper onto the bracket
    • Replace and tighten the T55 Torx bolts
    • Torque the bolts to 30 ft/lbs
  6. step 6 : Reinstalling the Wheel
    • Slide the wheel into place
    • Start the lug nuts by hand
    • Tighten the lug nuts preliminarily
    • Lower the vehicle to the ground
    • Tighten the 22mm bolts
    • Tighten the lug nuts to 100 ft/lbs in a crossing or star pattern
    • Torque the center hub nut to a 125 ft/lbs
    • Reattach the center cap
  7. step 7 : Testing the Brakes
    • Pump your brakes repeatedly until they feel firm
    • Test your brakes at 5 miles per hour and then 10 miles per hour
    • Road test the vehicle

After watching the 1A you tube video on this repair, I decided to do this repair myself and after completing this in a few hours, I figured I saved myself 250.00 not using a repair shop. The part was shipped quickly, fit perfect and I am going to buy a second one to replace the other side. ( It will go bad someday anyway, so why not change it now? )I highly recommend 1A auto parts and videos for your repairs you feel comfortable doing.

Put this on my 2001 sierra, included the abs sensor. No issues at all so far. 3 weeks in , about 1000 combined highway city miles. Highly recommend. Tip: Bad hub symptoms were abs light, and abs kicking in at low speed even after testing the abs sensors resistance. Once I removed the hub assembly I noticed a tiny bit of play in the bearing, but not enough to notice when the wheel was mounted. Follow the videos for installation.

I was very skeptical and had a lot of doubts about this product for my 01 Tahoe Z71. I bought it anyway. Hub was nicely packaged, I installed it about 4 weeks ago (40+ miles). We have been driving the truck ever since and I have to say that I’m impressed. It feels OEM, so far it’s been operating to factory specs, the part is really doing its job, when it arrived it felt of good quality did not look or feel of cheap material. I will definitely buy from 1A Auto again. I recommend it.

The replacement hub for my GMC Sierra arrived two days after I ordered it. That was with the free shipping option. It fit perfectly and the brake sensor was just like the factory one. It was a lot less expensive than anyone else offered. I would not hesitate to recommend this unit from 1A Auto to anyoone.

I changed the hub bearings three times over the course of 2 1/2 years. The final time I had MOOG hub bearings installed as I did not want to change them ever again ?? 1A Auto stood behind their product warranty but it’s required to send the old parts back in. I didn’t do this because I was told that shipping would cost approximately 50.00 not much less than the parts themselves. I found it easier to just purchase new ones as their shipping from Lenexa is pretty fast.
