How to Replace Radiator Fan Clutch 96-04 GMC Yukon

See how to replace the fan clutch on your 96-04 GMC Yukon in this 1A Auto video. The process will be similar in other GM vehicles, too.

  1. step 1 : Disconnect the battery
    • Use an 8 mm socket and ratchet to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. step 2 : Remove the air intake hose and fan shroud
    • Loosen two clamps, one at the front of the throttle body and the other against the air box.
    • Pull the air intake hose assembly up and out.
    • Remove two 10mm bolts.
    • Move the radiator hose out of the way and pull out the fan shroud.
  3. step 3 : Remove the fan
    • Use a wrench and a hammer to loosen the nut and remove the fan.
    • To replace your fan clutch remove the four bolts on the back of the fan, replace, and bolt back in.
    • Tighten the bolts to 20-25 ft lbs.
  4. step 4 : Reassemble.
    • Put the fan back on and use a wrench and hammer to tighten the nut.
    • Pin the fan shroud back on and bolt it in using the two 10 mm bolts and your socket and ratchet.
    • Fasten the upper radiator hose back in place and the air intake hose.

Most likely yes, BUT, this is a heavy duty unit and the fan will be running a lot with a lot of noise sounding like a dump truck. For a normal pickup, Tahoe or Suburban type of vehicle I would get the normal replacement version. It works as the factory designed.

It appears that it fits nearly all Chevy and GM vehicles within a certain year range. I would recommend checking the product web page (look under the section entitled "vehicle fit" for your make, model and year) or calling 1AAuto at the toll free number on their web page to ask them about your specific vehicle. The applications are listed by vehicle and not by engine size, so I would expect it fits all engine sizes of a given year and model.

Im still having issues after installed. I'm getting SES again and same code. P1481 cooling fan speed.sensor circuit. What else could it be? I even changed the relay.
