Overview

Eagle was a marque of the Chrysler Corporation from 1987, after the purchase of American Motors, up until 1998 when it was discontinued following the merger of Chrysler and Daimler-Benz AG.

Origin

When the Chrysler Corporation purchased American Motors (AMC) in 1987, the remains of AMC formed the Jeep/Eagle division. The Eagle marque was a short lived venture after the buyout to re-brand the legacy AMC vehicles it had acquired since the automaker had sold its cars using the acronym of its corporate name—AMC—since 1970 and had never developed any separate brands under their corporate umbrella, as was common for the larger automakers, like Ford and GMC. The Eagle marque replaced AMC in the dealerships, transforming most former AMC/Jeep dealers into Jeep/Eagle locations. AMC engineers designed the only two all-original Eagle vehicles, the Eagle Premier and Eagle Medallion. After that, most Eagle vehicles were just rebadged Eagles and Mitsubishis. This becomes apparent when looking at the Eagle Talon, which has a striking similarity to the Mitsubishi Eclipse. Each Eagle car, however, is just as reliable and impressive as the vehicle it is based upon and in actuality, some drivers even prefer the Eagle Talon to the Mitsubishi Eclipse due to the lower price tag and similar performance.

The End of the Road

Although the Eagle brand enjoyed modest popularity, its failure was not due to poor quality or engineering. Eagle cars were, for the most part, the same as several other popular, high sales volume automobiles at the time. A lack of advertising by the division and the indistinguishable nature of the Eagle brand, in addition to the popularity and profitability of Jeep vehicles, and the emphasis placed upon them over Eagle vehicles by dealers, ultimately led to its downfall. In 1997, after a decade of poor sales, Chrysler announced it would be discontinuing the Eagle brand. All that remained was the Eagle Talon, which rolled off the assembly line in 1998. The car, along with the Eagle brand in entirety, was then discontinued that same year as a result of the merger between Chrysler Corporation and Daimler-Benz AG, which has since split. With the Eagle brand gone, Jeep became its own standalone division in the newly formed corporation of DaimlerChrysler. However, despite the fact that the Eagle brand did not survive the merger of the Chrysler Corporation and Daimler-Benz AG, the quality of Eagle vehicles is equitable to the brands that the Eagle name replaced. Because of this, you will still see a lot of Eagle automobiles on the streets today, and the Eagle marque is still popular among used car dealerships around the country. Popular Eagle models include the Eagle Talon, Eagle Medallion, Eagle Summit, Eagle 2000, and more.
