How to Install Rear Wiper Motor 2010-15 Toyota Prius

How to repair, install, fix, change or replace a broken,damaged, or failing rear windshield wiper motor on 11 Toyota Prius.

step 1 :Remove the Tailgate Panel
- Pry off the top panel with a trim tool
- Pop the side trims off with a trim tool
- Pop off the bottom trim with a trim tool
- Pry off the middle trim with a trim tool

step 2 :Removing the Rear Wiper Arm
- Lift the cap on the rear wiper arm
- Remove the 10mm nut from the wiper arm
- Rock the wiper arm back and forth
- Remove the wiper arm

step 3 :Removing the Wiper Motor
- Disconnect the electrical connector
- Remove the three 10mm bolts from the motor

step 4 :Installing the Wiper Motor
- Tighten the three 10mm bolts to the motor
- Connect the wiring harness

step 5 :Installing the Rear Wiper Arm
- Press the wiper arm into place
- Tighten the 10mm nut to the wiper arm
- Press the cap on the wiper arm

step 6 :Installing the Tailgate Panel
- Press the middle trim into place
- Press the lower trim into place
- Press the side trims into place
- Press the upper trim into place

To remove the rear hatch trim, you'll have to start at the top piece here. Use a plastic prying tool, you can buy these from 1aauto.com. Slide it underneath here, pop it out, and they'll snap. Just get it started. It's got four clips. If a clip stays behind, not a big deal. You can use this part of the tool, or this part of the tool, slide it underneath here, pop it out and it can be reused by simply pushing it back in here. Put that aside. Now we can pop the side trim off, and this will be the same for both sides. Usually get started like this and it'll pop right off. Un-clip it from this lower one. Do the same to the other side.
The middle piece is not the next piece, it's actually last. We can do the bottom part here. Use the plastic prying tool, the narrow one. There's a small cut out spot here. I can get in here underneath it. Pop it off the clips, pull it down, and work your way around it. It has significant force, so you have to put on it to pull it out. Work your way all the way around using the plastic prying tool to help you take them off. Do the same on this side. Pry it down. Separate it from this middle panel and try to pull forward and up with a good amount of force.
You're tying to separate it from these little pull handle cups and slide behind the metal. Pop it off this panel here. This does seem to have broken off, but it really didn't. You just push it back into place, because one: it's inside the panel holds it up against it. Then you reach in and grab it so it won't come apart one it's in there. Now, with the lower and the upper panels removed, we can get to the center panel. Start to pull it down. Just unclip it. The clips have some good tension to them, so I'm going to really pull on it. With all these trip panels off, you can get to the rear washer nozzle. You can get to the rear wiper motor.
These are your connections for the defrost on this lower piece of glass, and then the defrost on the upper piece of glass if you need to make repairs there. You can also reach the rear connector for your door handle and all bolts, the nuts, for your rear trim panel.
The plate lights are accessible through openings in the trim, so you don't have to take off the trim, but you can see them in here. And of course, all your wiring harnesses are in here.
Remove this cap on the rear wiper. You could go this way, but it doesn't move that much. So, clip it down and pull the two sides apart gently. Lift it up, it lifts off. You have access to this nut that's under here. Get all the little spider egg nest.
To remove the nut holding on the rear wiper arm, use a 10mm socket extension and ratchet. Hold onto the wiper arm, break it free. This one came loose pretty easily. Lift up on the arm, rock it back and forth, and it'll come off of the wiper motor. Disconnect the electrical connector from the wiper motor. Push in on the lock from the bottom here, pull the connector out, put that aside. Three 10mm bolts holding that in. Use the 10mm socket extension and ratchet. Get the final one here, hold on to the motor. The motor will pull right out, right out of the rubber grommet in the glass. There's the wiper motor for the rear.
To reinstall it, very carefully put the shaft for the wiper motor through that grommet in the glass. Get these holes lined up and start the bolts by hand. With the socket ratchet extension tight, I'll just stop. I'll do the same for number two. Put the connector back in. It clicks when it locks in place. The motor is swapped.
Reinstall the wiper arm. There's splines here, they'll line up as you put it on, but you'll also want to line it up where it was originally. You can see where that dust mark was. That should be good there. Reinstall the nut. Tighten it down. When I feel like it's tight, I'll stop. I don't want to break the motor off the shaft. Reinstall the cap. It clips on the bottom, clips over the top, snaps in place. Wiper arm is reinstalled.
Reinstall the middle trim piece first. There's four clips on the inside here. Slide it up and into position. Clip it in place. Reinstall the lower part. It does have some tabs here and here. They're going to fit into the openings here and here on the center trim piece. These hand pull handles that are on the panel. They come off and the hook into the sheet metal here. Get into position. I'm going to go in this way with it, slide them in, push it back in on the clips, trim panels are reinstalled.
Reinstall the two side pieces. These install the same exact way for both sides. Line them up into here, just clips into place. Do the same for the other one. Reinstall the center piece. It's key, there's a wide part that fits in this wide opening here. Then two pieces here that fit over here so you don't try to install it backwards. It won't fit. These will either line up with the corresponding openings. Trim is reinstalled.
