How to Remove Trunk Panel 2003-09 Toyota 4Runner

Hey friends, it's Len here, from 1A Auto. Today we're going to be working on our 2006 Toyota 4Runner, and I want to show you how to remove and reinstall your rear trunk panel. If you need any parts, check us out, 1aauto.com. Thanks.

Okay, so we're inside the trunk area. And once you get this hanging down, right here's a little plastic cover. Just going to give that a little pop. It comes right off. Right under there, there's either a 10 millimeter headed bolt or you can use a Phillips head screwdriver. I'm going to use 10 millimeter, remove that. We'll leave the bolt right with it. Set it aside.

Okay, so next we're going to take this part down. Okay. So you're going to need a couple plastic trim tools, a nice skinny one because there really isn't much area to try to get it in here. Hopefully you can find a spot, maybe something like that. And then we're going to use the thicker one, which is going to give us much more leverage, and we'll try to pry this down. There's going to be some little push clips that go all the way around this. Okay. So of course once it starts breaking free, you're going to want to be careful so it doesn't come falling down and hurt you. If you wanted to, you can come like this and sit in here and do your thing that way. You do you boo-boo.

So, here we go. Put this in here. I'm using a plastic trim tool because obviously I don't want to mar up the paint using a screwdriver or anything like that. So I get that in there. Just got to get it to break free. I'm just going to keep following it with my hands here until I find the next area. Obviously, be careful for any pinch points. I don't want you to hurt yourself. Looks like we're on a roll here. Awesome.

Bring it down. Take a peek inside. We can see what's going on. I've got another little push clip right down there in the center. There it is. What else do we got? Probably coming up along the top. I'm sure that there must be something. Just give it a bonk forward. Okay. Ready? Just like that. Here's our trunk cover. Awesome.

Okay, so it's time to get this back up onto our tailgate. We're going to take a look and make sure all of our little clippy-doos are still on the tailgate panel here. We'll go all the way around. Of course, there, there. Uh-oh. And there. So we're missing one. Take a look. Here it is. Okay.

So we've got a basic tool. It's just a little forky tool here. Just going to try to get it in between the body and the clip. Pry it out. Just like that. Now we're going to take this, slide into the panel. Awesome. Okay.

So, we remember when we were taking this down, we had to kind of give it a loving bonk forward. So now what we're going to need to do is line it up, slide it up along the window, just like this. We need to make sure that it's down. Looks like this side comes up, so it's not all the way down yet. Okay. We'll go up here. Give that a bonk. Bonk. You can bring it down, obviously, if you need to. Just go all the way around, make sure it looks like it's sitting exactly along the sides. If it's hanging down anywhere, obviously the clip's not working like it should. That looks great.

So we have our bolt. You can either use your 10 or your Phillips head, right? I'm going to use my Phil... my 10, sorry. Put it right up into the hole here. Should want to tighten right up. That feels awesome. We'll take this, you've got your little tab right here, that's going to slide right in. And then you're just going to push this up just like that. We'll grab our gear out of the back here, anything that you don't want in there. Grab this, pull it down, close the trunk.
