How to Replace Ignition Switch 2007-16 Chevrolet Suburban

step 1 :Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10 mm Wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal
- Wiggle it off the battery post an set it aside so it doesn't make contact again

step 2 :Removing Necessary Panels
- Remove the side panel that covers the fuse box
- Use the Philips head screwdriver to remove all screws holding on the main bottom panel
- Use 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the parking brake release lever
- Remove any screws from the bottom steering wheel cover off, if applicable
- Pry the cover off straight down
- Tilt the steering wheel all the way down
- Pry the upper cover off straight up

step 3 :Removing the Ignition Barrel and its Components
- Follow the orange wire and disconnect the electrical connection
- Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the crank position
- Use a small Allen key to insert into the small hole at the top of the ignition cylinder
- Push down on the Allen key while pulling outwards on the ignition to release it
- Let go of the key
- Keep gently pulling and wiggling back and forth on the ignition until it comes out
- Disconnect the electrical connection to the theft control module
- With the help of a pick, release the clips on the backside of the module
- Pull straight out to remove it

step 4 :Removing the Ignition Switch
- Using a pick, pull the red tab out from the ignition switch electrical connection
- Using a pick, release the lock for the green wires and remove the connector
- Push in the two small tabs that lock the ignition switch in place
- Pull down at the same time and wiggle it back and forth if necessary to remove it

step 5 :Reinstalling the Ignition Switch
- Turn the gears of the new ignition switch clockwise until they stop
- Using a large screwdriver, turn the ignition clockwise as if you were starting the car
- Turn until you feel spring tension (that being the crank position), then gently let go
- Insert the ignition switch until it clicks into place
- Reconnect its electrical connection and lock the red tab back in

step 6 :Reinstalling the Ignition Barrel and its Components
- Line up the theft module and push it straight down
- Reconnect the electrical connection for it
- Line up the ignition cylinder and push it back in place until it clicks
- Turn the key back and remove the key

step 7 :Reinstalling all the Panels
- Line up the top steering wheel panel and snap it into place
- Line up the bottom steering wheel cover and snap that back into place
- Insert any screws in the bottom cover is applicable
- Line up and snap back into place the big cover underneath the steering wheel
- Insert all the applicable screws that were removed
- Bolt down the parking brake release lever using the two 10 mm bolts

step 8 :Reconnecting the Battery
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal
- Tighten it down with a 10 mm wrench

All right, we're going to disconnect the battery. I'm going to use a 10mm wrench, and we're going to disconnect the negative post on the battery. Just loosen this up a little bit. Then I can grab it and wiggle it back and forth. We can take it and tuck it out of the way.
Going to pull this cover off, grab two fingers underneath and pull. And pull this cover off with a Phillips head screw, right here. The retainer holder for this cover is broken, just to let you know. I'll take this screw out over here. All right, and then there's a 10mm bolt right here, and you can use a 10mm socket, an extension and a ratchet. Pull this bolt out. Pull that out. And this slides back and pulls out. There's two little grooves right there. We're going to grab this and just pull straight forward. Some of these clips are broken. Those are the retainers that hold it.
I'm going to pull this adjuster lever off, for the steering wheel adjuster. Just pull it straight out. You can use screwdriver if you need to. Next thing to grab on this cover and pull it straight down. Sometimes there's screws that hold the cover on. This one does not have screws. We'll pull the cover down here, and move the steering wheel down, pushing on the adjuster. We're going to push up on this cover, pull out the front a little bit, and then this will come off. Pull that up. We're going to take this boot and I'm going to slide it up like that.
Now I'm going to disconnect this connector right here that's connected to this orange wire. Going to push on the connector and pull out and I'm going to feed this wire back this way. I'm going to pull this ignition cylinder out. I'm going to put the key in. I'm going use a little Allen and I can push down in this hole once I rotate the key. So rotate the key to the crank position and push down and that releases it and then I can let the key go and pull. Wiggle it back and forth. Then disconnect the connector to the theft control module. Just push this little tab and pull this wire out. You can use a little pick to push down and pull that out. Then you can use another right angle pick and on the back side here there's little clips that hold this on. Pull it straight out. There's the little clips. Put the right angle pick behind those and you can pull it straight out.
All right, so the ignition switch, I disconnect the connector. Pull this red lock out and use a pick. There we go. So pull that red tab out like that. You can push right here, pull the connector out. Pull that aside. So you're going to take your pick and back here on the inside of this, you're going to push this in and clip it and then twist and pull this up. What I was doing was on this side was a little lock. So you can push that lock in and that will release it so you can spin it free. I'm going to pull the ignition switch out. They do make a special tool for this, but you can just use a pick. And you go on this side, push that down. Go on this side and push this down, and there's your ignition switch.
We're going to reuse our ignition, but if you were replacing your ignition switch, you want to make sure when you get the new one, generally this gear selector is all the way over in that position. So what you're going to want to do, when it's in that position, take a large screwdriver, go in this hole, I'm going to go to the left all the way until it stops. Then that will make these gears line up properly. We can slide the ignition switch back in, like so. I can take our screwdriver again, slide it in there, push it down. You're going to go all the way, like you're starting it. The spring tension, and then you're going to let up. Then we're going to pull this out. That will make it so our lock cylinder will go in at the right position.
I'm going to reinstall this. I'm going to slip it in the hole and then twist it. Just like that, and it's locked in. I'm going to reconnect our connector right here. Line it up, push it in till it locks and then push the little red lock in. Looks good.
Okay, we're going to reinstall our theft module, just line it up here, like this. Push it down. We're going to take the connector, plug the connector back in. Now we're going to take our ignition cylinder with our key in it, and we're going to line this little tab up with that little groove right there, push that in. Turn it back and pull it out.
Now we're going to put this upper cover back on. We'll take this boot, slide it down and slide it over the cover, so that lines up in that channel, like that. And this will go down here. Push that down like that. Slip that up, take the lower cover, slide this in this shifter boot groove. Like that. Lock it in place. It's locked in. Good. We're going to reinstall this lever like that. And take this lower shield, install this. You have the clips right there and right there. There should be one right there. Line that up. Push it on. Take the parking release lever, with these little grooves, going to slide up and then slide forward. Then take the 10mm bolt and socket and the extension, install it in the hole and tighten it up. Snug that up. Take our Phillips head screw, install it right here with a Phillips head screwdriver. Take this Phillips head screw, stick it right here. The bracket is broken off this panel. And we're going to put this cover on like that.
Now we're going to connect the battery. We're going to reconnect our battery. Grab the negative cable, hook it back up. All right, now I'm going to use my 10mm wrench and tighten down the nut. Not too tight, you don't want to break the terminal. Tighten it and check it and make sure it doesn't wiggle. Seems good.
