Hi I'm Mike Green. I'm one of the owners of 1A Auto. I want to help you save time and money repairing and maintaining your vehicle. I'm going to use my 20+ years experience restoring cars and trucks like this to show you the correct way to install parts from 1AAuto.com. The right parts installed correctly. That's going to save you time and money. Thank you and enjoy the video.

In this video we're going to show you our methodology basically for replacing plug wires. We're doing this on a Ford Ranger, but really this goes for any vehicle where you're replacing the plug wires that run from the coil to the spark plugs.

Okay, so replacing spark plug wires, this is 4-liter Ranger, a couple of different options. What I usually like to do is I do them one at a time. I unhook the wire from the coil. Actually the first thing I do is I follow the wires down and then I find things like this. This is a little clip that holds the wires and it's important. You don't want to just rip the wires out of here and break these clips. You want to keep these clips intact because they keep the wires from shorting out on anything. You want to make sure that you use them when you put it back together.

Usually these clips, if you just get a little screw driver in here and pry a little bit. We can pull them out. Once you've found any clips like that then you can just go to the first wire and like I said, I just do it one at a time. This wire, I do have another little clip down here to undo. Let's pull this wire out. Then when you get down to here where it connects to the engine, you want to try and twist it. Then you twist and you pull at the same time. Then you pull the wire off and take note of where it's routed. It's routed down in between here.

Now here I've got my new wires all lined up pretty much by size. This one is probably a little bit, it's probably; I'm going to take this medium sized one since it's the middle one and it had to go up to the coil. I'm actually going to take and switch over this armor because that protects it from heat and from shaking on metal. I've got my new one ready to go in. I want to make sure I feed my new one right down through the same way. Obviously this is the time to change your spark plugs if you want to change the spark plugs as well. Then I'll get it on the top and push it on to the coil. Pop it back in here. Pop this back into this retainer. I'll repeat that for all of the wires. I'm just doing them one by one.
Like I said, if you're looking to replace the spark plugs it's a good time to do it while you have it apart. You will run into on a car like this Ranger, this side you're going to see you can't get to the side of the engine.

Really what they intend for you to do is get to the plugs through the inner fender here. Let's see if we can see. You can see there's one of the plugs right there, so that's one of the plug wires. You can actually reach through down here and that's the best way to get to it. You can see that big metal tube right there. That's the exhaust manifold so you obviously want to be doing this when the car is cooled down. You don't want to do it when the car is hot.
