Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace a tailgate handle on this 2011 Chevy Silverado 1500. It's a similar process on most of the GM pickup trucks from 2008 to 2012 and the only tools you're going to need for this is a Phillips screwdriver and a 13mm socket and ratchet as well as a flat blade screwdriver.
Using a Phillips screwdriver, you want to remove these ten Phillips heads bolts that line this tailgate panel. Also you want to remove these two 13mm bolts here. We'll just fast-forward as he removes all of these. Now, with all those removed, you can remove that tailgate panel.
Then you just want to remove this one 13mm bolt right here. Once that's removed, you want to put your tailgate up. Now, using a flat blade screwdriver, just pry out this bezel right here. Now, you can see there's a clip right here on this rod. You just want to pull that off, pull the rod out, and you want to do the same thing on the other side. Once you've done that, you can pull the handle out.
You can see on the right is the old door handle and bezel; on the left is the new door handle and bezel from 1A Auto. You can see they're identical. They fit exactly the same. The only thing you have to do is remove the lock cylinder from your old one and put that into the new one. To do that, you just want to pry out this clip right here. Once you get that clip off, you can just pull that lock cylinder right out. You just want to push it into that new door handle bezel.
Now you want to take your new tailgate handle, put it back into place and you want to reconnect those rods. You want to push them into place and then push those clips down onto them. You want to take that bezel, put the door handle through it, you want to put the lock through the square part on the door handle, and then push the bezel into place. The other side of the tailgate, you want to replace that 13mm bolt.
Now you want to take your tailgate panel, put that back into place. and we'll fast-forward as he replaces the ten Phillips heads bolts and the two 13mm bolts.

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the tailgate handle bezel on this 2011 Chevy Silverado 1500. Sometimes these bezels just crack or break. It's a pretty simple replacement. The only tools that you're going to need for this is a Phillips screwdriver and a 13 millimeter socket and ratchet, as well as a flat-blade screwdriver.
Using a Phillips screwdriver you want to remove these ten Phillips head bolts that line this tailgate panel, and also you want to remove these two 13 millimeter bolts here. Once that's removed, you want to put your tailgate up. Now you want to stick a flat-blade screwdriver behind the bezel and just pry it out. It should come right off.
To install your new one, you just want to put the handle up inside the bezel. You want to run the lock through the square on the handle, and then just push that bezel into place. On the other side of the tailgate, you want to replace that 13-millimeter bolt. Now you want to take your tailgate panel and put that back into place. We'll fast-forward as he replaces the 10 Phillips head bolts and the two 13 millimeter bolts.

For years my tailgate would not close easily- it often required several attempts and sometimes it would open spontaneously. When the bezel broke I decided to replace both the bezel and handle. Replacement was easy and took about 20 minutes. 1AAuto has several videos on YouTube which demonstrate the process. The parts fit and worked perfectly. Now the tailgate closes easily and stays closed. I did not need to replace the latch rods - the old ones were fine. 2007 K1500 new body style.
Almost OEM

This was exactly what I needed to be able to shut my tailgate again without having to slam it every time. I did not use the supplied bezel as I was too lazy to want to mess with the lock but everything else fit great and was easy enough to install.

1A auto made this repair super easy.
I would have to slab my 10/15 times before it would stay shut!
I looked on their site and watched the how- to video.
I ordered the part and it arrived a few days later and in under ten minutes the job was done.
Thank You 1A auto!

Perfect fit and the video instruction was spot on. I added plenty of grease to the rods as far as I could reach through the tailgate latch hole and then also a layer on the handle itself. Hopefully this handle will last longer than the original.

Please watch the supplied video on the website for this task. In general, the Chevy trucks are all very similar in the R&R process.

Watch a video on utube. There are three clips that are about 1/2 inch wide that snap into the tail gate. Loses all of the bolts first to take pressure off of the clips. I used a very stiff/strong plastic putty knife. I've been told there is actually a tool for that job. The good news is that was actually the hardest part of the job.

Your going to break the ears off so just have a replacement ready. Unless it's fairly new. Just watch YouTube.
