In this video, we'll show you how to replace the washer pumps on this 2002 Ford Escape. It should be the same as any '01 to '07 Escape and both pumps for the windshield and the rear window are located basically in the same place. Tools you'll need are a small Phillips screwdriver, flat blade screwdriver, and a catch pan.
Your washer pumps are located on your washer bottle, which is behind the bumper cover on the passenger side in front of the wheel, and you'll need to remove three Phillip style clips. You can see the screwdriver right there, short screwdriver, kind of twist out counterclockwise on the center of the clip, which is a little screw, and then, you can pull the clips out. Again, you'll remove three right in front of the wheel and then pull that inner wheel well back and you'll be able to see the back of your reservoir. When you see it in the video, I have the whole bumper cover off, that's not necessary. It was just a whole lot easier to do the video that way.
Right on the back, here, are your pumps, and there is a connection. You press in the middle of the connection and pull up. There is a little tab right in the middle, and then, your other one is right over here and press in the middle of it. It'll pull up. Disconnect those and here's where the fluid starts coming out. You can feel the hoses right on the bottom of the pumps and you just want to try and twist the hose to get it to come out and twist and pull it off. I'm going to let that drain out. Now, to remove the pump, take a regular screwdriver, and pry up underneath. Then, alternate back and forth, prying the bottom and pulling and the pumps come right out. Note here, while I'm removing that second one, obviously usually only one goes bad at a time, so what you want to do is unplug one of the pumps and then test the washers that used to work; so if your rear washer was not working but your front was, unplug one of them, and then if your front still works, then you know that's the one, the one you unplugged is the one you want to replace. If the front doesn't work after you unplugged it, then replug it in and replace the opposite motor.
Now, you can reinstall new washer pumps. Push them in firmly. You connect the hoses and re-plug and reconnect the harnesses.
Now, you can refill your reservoir and it's time to test it. So, now, I pull up and they're working properly. A couple quick notes on the test. You do have to have your hood closed. There is a switch that prevents the washers from working if the hood is not closed. Also, test both washers, possibly you could connect the wrong connections, and then in that case when you pulled your windshield washers, your back window might go off; so if you do that, just switch the electrical connections and you will be all set.
Here, I'm just putting the clips back in the inner fender to hold it together and you're all done.
