Mistubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation is a division of Daimler Trucks of Daimler AG and is based out of Kawasaki, a city in Kanagawa, Japan. Mistubishi Fuso manufactures many kinds of specialized vehicles, such as heavy, medium, and light duty trucks, and light duty buses and vans.
Mitsubishi Fuso’s roots date back to the Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Company in 1932 with the creation of the B46 Bus, nicknamed the Fuso. As a commercial bus, the Fuso could transport up to 38 people with a 6-cylinder engine producing 100 horsepower. The Fuso name originates in a term that has referred to both Japan and a hibiscus tree. This name went on to represent many other products produced by the brand.
The Shipbuilding Company was later renamed Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, where it produced all types of industrial machinery. Trucks and buses happened to be among its endeavors. Post-WWII the company split up into three companies, which later merged back together to form Mitsubishi Fuso Heavy Industries in 1964. Over this time, Mistubishi Fuso built Japan’s first heavy-duty cab-over truck and Japan’s first small size bus. The company’s bestselling truck, the light-duty commercial Canter, was also released in 1963.
By 1970 MIH agreed to a joint-venture with Chrysler and established the Mitsubishi Motors Corporation to move all of its motor vehicle operations under one umbrella and to increase exports. By 1985 the Mitsubishi Trucks of America had been established, and by 1993 the partnership with Chrysler came to an end. By 2003, the Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation was created to handle all of the bus and trucking products. Eventually Daimler AG gained a controlling interest, and it is now a subsidiary of Daimler’s trucking division.
Since then, there are many commercial Fuso buses and tracks traveling freeways internationally. The “clean energy” Canter Eco Hybrid and the hybrid electric bus, Aero Star, are a few of the available advancements made by Fuso, and it continues to produce many types of vehicles today.
