How to Replace Tie Rod 1992-2000 Honda Civic

1. Removing the Wheel
Loosen the lug nut covers
Pry off the center cap with a flat blade screwdriver
Loosen the lug nuts with the vehicle on the ground
Raise the vehicle with a floor jack
Secure the vehicle on jack stands
Remove the lug nuts
Pull off the wheel
2. Removing the Tie Rod
Measure from the boot to the outer tie rod and record it
Loosen the 19mm nut on the tie rod with a 19mm wrench
Remove the cotter pin with pliers
Remove the castle nut with a 17mm socket
Hit the knuckle with a hammer
Twist the tie rod out
3. Installing the New Tie Rod
Twist on the new tie rod
Push the outer tie rod down into the knuckle
Replace the castle nut
Push the cotter pin into place and bend the ends in separate directions with pliers
Measure and double check the distance of the boot to the tie rod
Turn the tie rod joint with the 14mm wrench to adjust the distance
Replace and tighten the 19mm nut
4. Reattaching the Wheel
Slide the wheel into place
Start the lug nuts by hand
Tighten the lug nuts preliminarily
Lower the vehicle to the ground
Tighten the lug nuts to between 100 foot-pounds in a crossing or star pattern
Reattach the center cap

In this video, we show you how to replace an outer tie rod on this 1998 Honda Civic. We show you on the passenger side, but the driver side is the same procedure. You'll need a new outer tie rod from 1AAuto.com, 17mm and 19mm socket and ratchet, 14mm and 19mm wrench, a hammer, pliers, a torque wrench, and Jack and Jack stands.
Start off by removing your wheel. You want to loosen up these lug nuts while the vehicle is on the ground, then raise it, and remove them rest of the way unless you have air powered tools and then you can remove it entirely while the vehicle is lifted. Once those are removed, you can just pull your wheel right off.
Right here is your outer tie rod. Measure from this boot to the center of the outer tie rod and remember that measurement. Now, you want to use a 19mm wrench on this nut and just loosen it up, and using pliers remove this cotter pin. Now use a 17mm socket and remove this castle nut, and you may need to just push the wheel all the way in that way you can break it free, and then you can turn the wheel back and remove it the rest of the way. Hit the knuckle with a hammer and that will break the tie rod free so you can lift it up and out. Then we'll fast-forward as Don just twists that off.
On the right is the old outer tie rod; on the left is the new one from 1A Auto. You can see they're identical, and will mount exactly the same. Twist your new outer tie rod into place. Now lift the outer tie rod, push it down to the knuckle, and replace the castle nut. Then we'll just fast-forward as Don tightens this up. Push the cotter pin in place, and then, using pliers, pin the ends of it in separate directions.
Now, measure and make sure it's the right distance. If it isn't, you want to use that 14mm wrench and you want to just turn this until it is the right distance. Once it is, use the 19mm wrench to tighten that nut. Then replace your wheel and your wheel cover and the four log nuts. You want to tighten them preliminary, lower the vehicle, and then tighten them the rest of the way. Then torque each of them in a crossing pattern to a 100 foot-pounds.

Mismatched Outer Rods

When I purchased this kit, I had a basic idea of what to expect: a set of two inner tie rods, a set of two outer tie rods, and that they would fit my 97 Civic EX. This kit does meet that criteria. But, the outer tie rod's are mismatched; they work as replacements, but do not match each-other.
One, let's call it 'A', is like the photo, the other, 'B', is smaller, with some blue lining on the grease joint. 'A' has a castellated nut (as to be expected), 'B' has a locking nut instead. They arrived in different packaging, but the same package. 'A's grease joint, the 'pouch' so to speak, was disconnected from the arm, and grease was all over the place. I wasn't aware that grease joints should be able to separate from the arm like this; this one pops off with barely any force. 'B's was sealed, at least. Neither had grease inserts (which is fine, and is how they are portrayed in the photo, just a head's up here).

I ordered these parts for my 97 Honda Civic came on time and was a matching set, I had one tie rod strip when I put the bolt on but the company contacted me and sent me a new one good parts and service at a good price

Purchase came quickly. The parts were almost exactly like the ones I was replacing except for a few minor details.
The set I purchased came with the boots for the inner tie rods too. The nipple for the vent tube connecting the to the new boots was too large for the OEM tubes to attach. This took more time to figure out a fix than the entire job and was quite frustrating. Definitely not direct replacement boots. They also supplied zip tie to secure the boots instead of the metal clamps.
The hole for the pin to go through was drilled to far to the end of the bolt on the ball joint so when the castle nut was torqued to spec the hole was barely even inside the castle nut. I had to make adjustments there too, so the castle nut wouldn't unthread. Pretty big deal because you don't want to crash when your ball joint comes out.
