William Durant, the founder of General Motors, started in the horse-drawn carriage business. It was there he had gained an awareness of the power of options, offering a number of carriages ranging from luxury to standard. After he purchased the Buick Motor Company, Durant wanted to apply the same idea to a new type of industry: the automotive world. With the prospective idea of expanding his inventory and market share, William Durant created General Motors in 1908 as a holding company for his young Buick company. In order to reach a wide crowd of consumers, Durant brought together over several automakers, some of which included Oldsmobile, Oakland (later known as Pontiac), and Cadillac, in an effort to put a large share of the market out of business. Later, GMC and Chevrolet had also joined the lineup, and the rest is history with GM becoming one of America’s “big three” and establishing itself as an automotive legend. Though many companies have come and gone under GM, they are still known as the owners of several popular brands found throughout the United States today, such as Buick, Cadillac, Chevy, and GMC. GM has changed along with the industry, from offering cars and trucks to SUVs, CUVs, and fleet vehicles. Today, they are a worldwide company and even manufacture foreign brands such as Opel, Holden, and Vauxhall, as well as their own parts.
