Brought to you by 1AAuto.com, your source for quality replacement parts and the best service on the Internet. Hi, I'm Mike Green. I'm one of the owners of 1A Auto. I want to help you save time and money repairing or maintaining your vehicle. I'm going to use my 20-plus years experience restoring and repairing cars and trucks like this to show you the correct way to install parts from 1AAuto.com. The right parts installed correctly. That's going to save you time and money. Thank you and enjoy the video.
In this video, we'll be replacing the tail light on this '99 Pontiac Grand Am, same as any '99 to '06 Grand Am. It's a pretty easy procedure. No tools are required.
Tail light replacement on a Grand Am starts in the trunk. See here. If you have this cargo net option, you want to pull that off and undo this thumb screw. Then, kind of pull this down and out, and then you can see four thumb screws. One, two, and back in here three and four. We're going to undo those. We're going to do this real time, and now, after this video, you have no excuse to be that person with the red tape on the tail light, because this is just that easy to do, you can get the parts and great service at 1AAuto.com. Why spend the money going and trying to find red tape that looks terrible. Just go out and buy a new light and replace it.
Once you get those off, then you just pull the light back. Just pull the light back, and then big connector right here. Basically, you grab with both your fingers like that. Pull that locking tab up. Pull the connector out, and then there's your tail light from the vehicle. Now, if you're just looking to service the bulbs, this big plate here comes off, and it's actually the bulb itself as well. You can see there are all the bulbs. I'm just going to clean this up real quick before I put it back together. To put this back together, you want to make sure you have this gasket all in there correctly, because it keeps the water from getting into the bulbs and getting into your tail light. That's pretty easy. Put it on there. Make sure everything is lining up. Push it on. Make sure all the tabs have locked into place. Connect your connector.
Now, you can see I took a second and just kind of cleaned up the car where it's going into. Put it in. Put the thumb screws back on. Start them. Then, these thumb screws have little rubber seals on them, so you want to tighten them up pretty good so that keeps the water from getting into your trunk. You can see, it's a pretty easy process; it doesn't really require any tools.
You might need a screwdriver just to help you pry that bulb plate out of the tail light. Some of those locks can be a little tough, but other than that, a regular screwdriver, you don't really need anything else. With this said, now you don't have any reason to be that car with the broken tail light and the red tape on the tail light. In these Grand Ams it's pretty easy to get a new light in there. Put your net back on, and you'll all ready to go.
We hope that helps you out. Brought to you by www.1AAuto.com, your source for quality replacement parts and the best service on the Internet. Feel free to call us toll free 888-844-3393. The company that's here for you on the Internet and in person. Thank you.

A great alternate to replacing the entire light

The part was as described and the bulbs fit in correctly. It got me back on the road and saved me some money. However, it did take a little work to get it installed. The gasket that seals the circuit board to the housing wasn't very well seated in the grove so it took quite a bit of trial and error to get it to seat correctly.
