Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the hood support struts. The procedure is the same for any 2002 to 2005 Mountaineer as well as the Ford Explorer. You'll need new hood support struts from 1AAuto.com and a small flat blade screwdriver.
You can see, when we lift our hood, it just falls right back down again. This is a sign that your hood supports have gone bad. You want something or someone to support the hood while you do this procedure. We're going to use this block of wood. To remove these supports just take a flat blade screwdriver. Pry out on this clip. Then pull the piston from the stud. Then do the same thing down here. It pulls free. We're going to replace both of our hood supports. We'll just fast forward as Mike removes the other one.
Up top are the old hood supports. Below are the new ones from 1A Auto. You can see they're identical and they'll fit exactly the same. Now, to replace your hood support pistons, just push them onto the studs. You may need to lift the hood a little bit to get it to go onto the stud. Then we'll just repeat that process over here. Do the same thing: just push it onto the studs. Now you no longer have to support your hood. You just test it out. Close it. Open it back up. It should practically open itself. You're all set.
