Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the headlights, as well as service the bulbs on this 2003 Mercury Mountaineer. We show you on the passenger side, but the driver side is a similar procedure. The items that you'll need include a new headlight from 1AAuto.com and a flat blade screwdriver.
Start off by pulling on this lever to open your hood. Then push this yellow tab over and lift the hood up. Then your headlight is held in with these two clips. You pull the clip up and out. Then do the same thing with this one. You need to try and pull the top out some first, but then you do have to get the bottom to come out at the same time.
I'm actually holding in at top and pushing out down here. It gets the whole headlight going. The same thing over here. I'm actually twisting down on the headlight like that so the whole thing comes forward.
To service the bulbs: this one here you turn counterclockwise. Pull it out, the bulb pulls free, and back in clockwise to lock. Then the headlight is right in here. Again, counterclockwise, there's the headlight. Pull and it comes off. There's a ring inside here, so again you turn counterclockwise, and then the bulb and ring comes out.
Take your new bulb and put the ring on. This tab for the harness will face up. I'm just going to pull the harness out of the way a little bit. Put the bulb in and make sure the bulb is seated then. Turn the ring clockwise to lock it. Make sure the bulb is firm and in place, and then reconnect your harness and put your cover back on.
Now, back here is the harness for your headlight and you want to pry that red clip back. Then push the tab underneath where the clip was. And while pushing the tab you want to pull on the harness to disconnect it. The easiest way to do this is to use the flat blade screwdriver to push the tab in while you're pulling back and it unclips. You just have to feed it through here, the hole right here. You will have to lift up the air intake box a little bit to get it out. Now your headlight's free.
On the driver's side, take your screwdriver, and you pry up on this little tab which disconnects that, and then you can get to this tab easy to disconnect it, and that's really the only difference. On the left is the old headlight; on the right is the new one from 1A Auto. You can see they're identical, and they'll fit exactly the same.
Feed that in, and you can reach in and grab the air intake box and move it out of the way. This way is to put the outside in first a little bit and work the inside in. Just check all of your wires and make sure nothing's getting pinched. You do have to work it by the grille, and usually just a light tap. The gaskets and stuff are a little tighter, so just give it a little push.
Just to give you an idea of how much newer your vehicle will look with new headlights, I'm going to show you some pictures. Here are the old, original headlights, and here are the new headlights from 1A Auto. You can see it makes the vehicle look newer; again, old headlights and new headlights.

Best headlight ever!

I can't say enough about these headlights. The fit and finish is spot on. Very well worth the money. I went with the Eagle Eye headlight and spent the extra $20 per headlight as I feel that I don't want to skimp on lighting, just like I wouldn't want to skimp on cheap wiper blades and other safety items. Amazing how nice these headlights are though. Can't beat 'em! I can't wait to try them at night.
