In this video, we're going to show you tailgate cable replacement on this 2002 Toyota Tacoma, a pretty easy process. All you need is a screwdriver bit that goes into a ratchet. Usually you need a little extra leverage to get those loose.
For your tailgate cables, you're going to want a Phillips bit like this that you can put on a ratchet. It gives you some extra leverage. Push it in. Make sure your other side is supported, so you don't end up denting your tailgate. You'll want to remove this plastic washer, by grabbing a hold of it and unscrewing it. Now your cable can just come up and off.
The new cable from 1A Auto, very simply you just put on and turn it. Make sure you have the plastic. Feed that through. Put your washer on, and then put this down on. Make sure the first few times, when you close your tailgate you force that cable down. Make sure it bends down the correct way.

Changing your tailgate cables is pretty easy. One thing you want to make sure of is that you don't ever drop your tailgate down because you'll end up denting it and bending it. Make sure either you have something supporting or have a helper support your tailgate. Lift it up and slide this tailgate up. Lift it up a little bit and then it comes off. Then you use a T40 Torx bit and a wrench to remove this bolt. That comes off, don't lose your washer.
To put it back on, the bolt has a shoulder in it. You want to make sure that when you tighten it the shoulder goes into the cable and that it doesn't stay out here and pinch it. Just put the bolt through the washer back into the tailgate. Again, you don't want to tighten up and have this be stiff. You want to make sure that you get it out on the shoulder of the bolt, and after you tighten it up, it moves freely. Then bend this up like that and hook it back on up there and you're all set.

Toyota Tacoma Tailgate Cables

Just like the original, excellent quality, price is 1/3 of the original dealer cost, it also comes with the screws and washers if you need them. The originals only last a few years if you use the tailgate a lot. Thank you 1A.
