Hi, I'm Mike Green. I'm one of the owners of 1A Auto. I want to help you save time and money repairing or maintaining your vehicle. I'm going to use my 20-plus years experience restoring and repairing cars and trucks like this to show you the correct way to install parts from 1AAuto.com. The right parts installed correctly: that's going to save you time and money. Thank you and enjoy the video.
In this video, we show you how to replace an outside door handle on this 2001 Chevy Malibu. It's the same as any '97 to '03 Malibu. Tools you'll need are pretty basic: flat blade screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, and 7mm and 10mm sockets with ratchet and an extension.
Take an 8mm wrench, disconnect your negative battery cable. This is more just to protect your battery from running down while you have the door open. We're going to fast-forward through removing the door panel. If you want to see this in regular speed, you just check out our other videos, but there's probably enough here to figure it out. Remove the switch, unplug it, remove the bezel around the door handle, a couple of other bezels and pull the door panel off.
Now, pull your water shield back. Right inside, there's the back of the door handle, you can see right here your lock rod is in a clip. What you want to do, somebody's already broken this clip, but use a screwdriver, put it in there and press on those teeth. While you're doing that pull the rod out. Then down here, you'll see a yellow clip. The only thing hard about this is actually filming it, you just reach in to the outside of this clip. I'm just pulling with my finger, pull it open, and pull this rod out. Then, once you have those disconnected, there's a 10mm bolt there. Then through this hole here is another 10mm bolt. Reach in here with this hand, reach up from the bottom, and then reach in with my screwdriver and pull that lock rod out.
Now, with a 10mm socket, and extension and a ratchet, these bolts come out. Now the handles pulls up and out just like that. If you're switching over to a new handle, you just pull this rod out like that. The other thing you want to do is transfer the lock over. There's a little clip right here, just pull up on it and then the lock comes out.
Here's a new handle from 1A Auto. You can see it comes molded in black plastic. I am going to put my original back on, because it is still in fine shape. I just want to show you that the new one's going to work great. It comes with a little bit of a different clip, but it doesn't really make a difference. You just put the rod on, bend it down, and then your lock snaps right in just like on the other handle. It'll go right into place. Again, black plastic, so you can if you have a broken door handle, you can replace it as is, it'll fix the broken door handle. If you want to paint it to match, find an automotive parts store with a good paint department, they can probably match the color of your car pretty well. Put some paint in an air-charged spray can, you can paint it yourself to match.
I'm going to take this back out and show you how to reinstall with the original handle. One important note is when we were putting this rod back in, make sure it goes on the outside of this lock rod. What I like to do next is just take the bolts, thread them in, and get them hand tight. Now take our lock rod, and in place of that broken clip I put a plastic zip tie in there. Now you just tighten up those bolts. Now make sure our door is unlocked.
Like in the beginning, we're going to fast-forward through putting the door panel on. Make sure you pull those harnesses through, and then everything goes back in reverse order. Then, in addition to this, just make sure you reconnect your negative battery cable and you'll be all set to go. If you want to see replacing this door panel in regular speed just check out our other videos.

Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace an exterior door handle on this 2003 Chevy Monte Carlo. We show you on the driver's side, but the passenger's side has a similar procedure. The items you'll need for this includes a flat blade screwdriver, a Phillips screwdriver, a T25 Torx driver, a putty knife, a 10mm socket, and ratchet with an extension.
Your door panel is held on with four screws. There's a Phillips screw here and a Phillips screw up here, and then down here under the pull handle there's two T25 Torx screws. We'll just fast forward as Mike removes those. Now, pry out behind this panel with a flat blade screwdriver, and then slide the panel forward and over the door handle. Then pry out on both sides of your door lock switch while pulling up on it. It should pull free.
There's an indent right here that you want to slide your putty knife into, and then just pry out on the clip. Then reach back behind the door panel and feel for the clips, and just pull out sharply to release the clips. Once you've release them all the way around, just lift the door panel up and then pull it back. Push the tab on this harness and pull it free. Do the same thing for this harness. Your door panel is free. Push on the tab on this harness and disconnect it. Unclip the harness from the door and pull it aside. Carefully, without damaging the water shield, you want to just peel it back.
Pry out on this clip, and then pry out on the adhesive on either side of this foam block. You want to make sure that you keep the adhesive to the block so you can stick it back into place later. If any of it peels off, make sure you push it back into place.
In these holes, you'll see two 10mm bolts, one there and one right there. Just go ahead and remove both of those. Inside your door you'll see this yellow clip. Just flip it forward and it will open up, and you just pull that rod free. You'll need to reach in and kind of push up on the door handle and pull out the bottom. Push the front of the door handle down, and pull it out. Then angle the back of the door handle down and pull it free. You want to just pull it up until you can access this lower rod right here and just pop it out. Then pull the door handle rod up and out. In your new door handle you're going to want to transfer over this rod, so just unclip it and maneuver it out of the door handle. You'll also want to switch over your lock cylinder, so just pry out on this clip and then just pull the lock cylinder up and out.
Take your new exterior door handle and push the lock cylinder into it and then push your door handle rod back into place and re-clip it. Feed the back end of the door in first. You've got to make sure that this goes between the track and the door lock access here. Then push this rod back into place. Get that rod down in, and just angle the back of the door handle up. Push it back and then angle the front of the door handle into place. Take your exterior door handle rod and re-clip it into this yellow clip and push the clip closed. We'll fast-forward as Mike replaces those two 10mm bolts and tightens them up. Just replace this cap.
Feed the foam block back into place and re-clip the top of it. We'll just fast-forward as Mike replaces the cover around the handle and the water shield. Push your weather strip back into place. Reconnect this harness and re-clip it to the door. To reconnect your door panel, just start off by reconnecting these two harnesses. Just put this switch through here, and then line up these slots with these four tabs. Just lift the door panel up, and push those slots onto the tabs. Then just make sure the clips are wind up, and hit them into place around the sides of the door panel. Push your door lock switch back into this panel. Slide the panel over your interior door handle and slide it back into place. Then just replace those four screws, and you're all set.

In this video, we're going to show you how to remove and reinstall the front door handle on this '99 Intrigue. Same as any '98 to '02 Intrigue and a similar process for other GM vehicles as well. Tools you'll need are Phillips and flat blade screwdrivers. You may need a small flat blade screwdriver, a T30 Torx driver, door panel clip tool or putty knife, and a 10mm wrench or a socket and ratchet with extension.
Start here, take this panel, and lift up carefully. Pull it down and, underneath, disconnect the two harnesses. Disconnect your mirror harness. Using the little flat blade screwdriver, push the little tab, push down, pry it up, pull it out. Use your screwdriver again and right behind your door handle you'll see a little slot. Put your screwdriver in and pry it out. Pull this little panel out. There are three screws. There's a Phillip screw, right there. This bezel comes off and you have to disconnect your switch. There's a T30 screw here and another T30 screw underneath that door pull. Speed it up here as I use a T30 Torx screwdriver to remove those two Torx screws and a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws for the door handle bezel. There's a little thumb tab, pull it back and off. You want either a putty knife or, if you have one, a door panel clip tool. Put the knife in under it, slide it until you feel a pin, give it a good pull, slide until you feel the next one, and keep going up. There's usually one up in here. Pull it out and then for our speaker here, disconnect it. Press the little tab. Disconnect the speaker. The door panel's off.
You want to make sure your window's all the way up. Pull this back to about there. Right inside the door you're going to see a little gray clip right down here. Use a little screwdriver to get in behind it and open it. Pull the rod right out. Up here, is a 10mm bolt there, and a 10mm bolt you can access right through there. The best tool for this job is a 10 mm socket with an extension, a nice long extension, so you can go right through this hole and access that bolt. I will speed it up here as I remove those two bolts. If you don't have a ratchet socket and extension, with just a 10mm wrench, you can get your hand in there and get those bolts out as well. Now, you want to take your door handle, and pull the bottom out. Pull it down. It's a little tricky here. I need to get the front down and then rotate it up. Get that lock mechanism out. Then, you have your lock rod here. You just kind of want to spin it off that lock rod and pull it up and out.
Here's my original handle, and a new handle from 1AAuto. Obviously, it comes molded in black. On a vehicle that's older, you may not really care about that. You may just want a working door handle. You can install it and, obviously, it will work just fine. If you wanted to paint it to match, you can do a variety of things depending on how much you want it to match. You can do everything from go to a hardware store and find a color that's close and paint it or if you want it to match closely go to an automotive part store that has a paint department. They can use your paint code or your VIN, mix you up some paint that will match closely, put it in an air charged can, and you can spray your handle. When you do spray the handle, you probably want to take off this gasket because you don't want to paint it. You will need to change some stuff over. For the rod, just like the lock rod, just kind of twist it and pull until it comes out and it can go into the new handle. Push it through with some force. Then the other thing you need to switch over is your lock cylinder. To get the lock out, you take this clip, you pry down on it. As you pry down on it, the lock comes out. Then it simply just snaps right into the new handle. Your handle is all ready to put in place. This handle matches the car and it's still is in fine shape, so I'm going to switch everything back over and just reinstall the old handle.
Put your rod in, reconnect your lock rod. As you put this down in, just make sure it doesn't get tangled in any of the other rods that are in there. Bring it up. Put that in. Just kind of pull the front out. Twist that down. The front's in. Lock it in place. Make sure your gasket fits nicely around here. I'm going to kind of speed up here. I'm putting the bolts back in on the inside. Just one note, make sure that after you've put the handle back on and kind of clipped it in place, just check that latch rod to make sure it's not hung up in the wrong place or anything. Both bolts are in. Now, just make sure this rod does want to be behind that weather strip. Put it into place and lock the clip back on. Now, I'm just removing that switch panel. I'm putting my water shield back up into place. I'll do a test and make sure the door unlocks before you close it. Then try a couple of shuts and opens and make sure everything is working good.
Then we'll keep the fast motion going as we put the door panel back on. You'll probably learn enough just seeing it here. But if you want to see this in regular speed, just check out our other videos.

In this video, I'm going to remove and then put back on the rear door handle on this 2002 Chevy Impala. This procedure is the same for a whole bunch of different GM vehicles that use this style handle. Tools you need are a Phillips screwdriver, a T30 Torx driver, a door panel clip tool or a putty knife, and a 10mm socket with a ratchet and extension.
To start, you're going to remove three screws: a Phillips screw right behind your door handle, and then two T30 screws right down in there. We'll fast forward through removing those screws. Obviously, the top one is with a Phillips screwdriver. The T30, you'll need a T30 Torx driver. It's, basically, kind of little bit of a star bit. Once you have those screws out, then you pull this up and out. There's a little clip at the front. There's a connector, I'm just grabbing my screwdriver and pushing in on a little tab with the screwdriver, prying a little bit and pulling at the same time. You can see there's a little tab you have to push on. Once that trim's removed, there are two more T30 screws right underneath. We'll fast forward through removing those again. Now, remove the little rear trim piece right up here. It just has a one clip on it. Just pull it, give a good tug. It pulls free. Now use either a door panel clip tool or I'm just using a putty knife. Basically, you just kind of slide it until you slide up against something, which is the pin. Then, give it a little tug. You can hear it snap a little bit. Slide it back. Find the next pin, give it a tug. Find the next pin, give it a tug. You could see, it's actually the first time this panel has ever been off so it does take a little bit of work, and force. Slide the knife or tool up again. Against the pin, good tug, and, eventually, you can kind of work your fingers underneath and pull. I reposition here, trying to release a couple of these other pins in the back of the door panel here. Give it a tug and it comes free. It's off. Now, you're going to want to pull back your insulation. It's fairly easy. It is stuck on there with some pretty heavy duty adhesive. Pull very lightly. You don't want to tear this and what you can do eventually is you pull it down. I'm just going to take my putty knife and just work it on to the adhesive, basically cut the adhesive and pull it down.
Now you can remove this plug right here. You'll see that my shield is puledl down. You don't have to pull it down that quick that far. I did do this for a couple of different videos that I did. Inside the door, there's an orange clip here. What you want to do is just, basically, reach in, take it out, and then take your latch rod out. There are two 10mm bolts holding the handle on. One is right there through that hole, and one right there through this rear hole, kind of hard to see. Get the right light in there. There it is. You'll need a 10mm socket and a ratchet and an extension, what you'll see be used here. Speed it up a little bit. With those bolts out, with one hand, I'm reaching in to the door, pushing up on the inside of the door handle and with the other hand, obviously, kind of pulling it out. It should just pull right up and out.
For the new handle . obviously this car doesn't need a new handle, but . you will just swap this lock rod onto your new handle. Make sure it has the locking clip. Handles from 1A Auto will be black. You can paint them to match by yourself. The best way to do that is to go to an automotive paint store and they can probably match with your paint code. Put it back in. Install it into the door and push. I find it easiest to take the first, the one that's closest to the big hole where you can fit your hand, and just start that one by hand. After starting that one, then what I'll do is, I put that back bolt into my extension socket, feed it in there and then use the ratchet to tighten it up and tighten up the other one. Now go back inside the door. With that little orange clip, make sure your rod is down in place, it should be in a little groove there. Push it in and then snap the clip on to it. Last but not least, take that plug and put it back in. Snap into place.
Once you've done your project, make sure your insulation is on there well. The door panel has 2 locating pins, the green pins. They are longer than the other ones. You just locate them. Get them into the correct hole first. See I do that in the front; and then the rear, same thing. Make sure the green pin goes in the right hole. That locates the door panel, push it on. Use a little fist bump to set the pins. I'll put this trim on with a clip. I noticed that the door panel is sticking out a little too much so just a little adjustment with the palm. Now, you can go into a little fast forward here. You want to put the T30 screws in and tighten them up. Now before you put that in, just make sure that you uncover that little hole where the screw goes in. That makes it a little easier than trying to put the screw through the insulation. Then, don't drop your screw, put that in there. Okay, get that nice and tight. Then, plug in your harness. Push the bezel down in and then install those two T30 screws. You should be all set. Get them nice and tight.
