2003 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 14 Piece Tailgate Kit TRQ BDA36073

First things you're gonna wanna do is make sure that your tailgate is down. Once you have it open and down, you're going to see these 3 bolts right there, remove those using a 13-millimeter socket. It's nice and tight. Let's get these out of here. Wiggle this handle around so it's nice and free. With this black bezel, the next thing you're gonna wanna have is one of these nice plastic trim tools. The reason why we're go use plastic is because we're gonna come in between the bed and the plastic shroud right here. Just go ahead and come right here, push it. Do the same thing right there. Once you have the top broken free, just go ahead and lift this straight up and draw it away. Go ahead and come in between here with a nice flathead screwdriver, pull that clip down, grab this rod and slide it out. Do the same to the other side. Let's just get this handle out of here. It's a good idea to take it out. The next thing you'd wanna do is grab onto these, give them a little squeeze, and take down your tailgate.

The next thing we wanna do is put a nice piece of wood with something soft to protect your tailgate, something that's gonna take a little bit of slack off of this. Now, I'm gonna grab onto this, pull it away, lift up, leave this hanging. Now, we're gonna remove our mounting bolts for the latch. Go ahead and grab this assembly. It's gonna have the rod coming with it. You can either disconnect it now and leave the rod in there or just pull the whole thing out. I'm gonna disconnect it as it is now, and I'll leave the rod right where it is. And there's the latch. It's a great idea to make sure you've got the right part. If it looks as though maybe your parts are opposite from what you're trying to replace, more than likely you have the wrong side of the vehicle. With that said, once you know you have the right one, let's go ahead and continue with the install. Just gonna take this. It's gonna line up pretty much just like that. So, go ahead and grab your rod, slide it up and through the hole just like that. And then make sure you take this little twist, lock it in. Make sure the rod can not slip out of there. It's very important.

Now, when you're putting in your latch, you wanna make sure you grab that rod and put it right up into this area. If you don't and it's sitting down under here, you're gonna have to go ahead and take that latch right back out of there and make sure you fix it. So, just do it now. Put it right up there and then go ahead and bolt in your latch. Now, we're just gonna take this, line it up with where it needs to go. It came with a nice new set of bolts, so we're gonna make sure we use those. You're gonna notice that there are two different bolts, though. The one that has the little shanked area is gonna go down here and it's gonna be the one that has the cable attached to it. Let's go ahead and snug these up. It's important to make sure after you've tightened that, this can still spin. That's what the shanked area on the bolt is for. So, now let's lift up on the tailgate just a teeny bit, line this up, lock it in. Now, if you're gonna be doing the other side, now is a perfect time to do that as well. Let's leave our three bolts right here where we can reach them. Now, we're gonna close the tailgate. Let's go ahead and get this handle in here. Weasel it in. There we are. Now, you're gonna grab your connecting rods here, slide it in, and then lock it down. Slide it in, bring this around, lock it in, give it a nice shake. Do the same to the other side.

So, now with this nice and loose, we can continue on to installing this. If you were to pay attention on the backside, you're gonna see that you have a couple little pitons. And then right here, you have some hookey-dos. When you go to install this, you're gonna put the bottom in first so that the pitons go down into here. They'll latch in and then just roll it in and it'll latch. Just like this. So, now from inside of the bed, you can see the backside of the tailgate, we're just gonna wiggle the handle around until we can see our bolt holes. Grab your bolts, go ahead and start all three of them in before you tighten any of them down. Let's go ahead and snug them up. Let's give it a test. Perfect.

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace a Tailgate hinge on this 2002 GMC Sierra 2500HD. It's the same process on most 1999 to 2006 GMC Sierras and the Chevy Silverados. The tools you'll need are 13 millimeter socket and ratchet, penetrating oil, anti-seize and it's helpful to have two people as you'll see in this video.

You want to start by just putting the tailgate down. As you can see, the hinge on this truck is in pretty bad shape. You want to just push the cable up and then it should pull off. Depending on the condition, this could be a little difficult, but just keep moving it around, and it should pop off. Now, while he tries to get that cable off, this is where it's helpful to have a second person. So, the other person can hold the other side when it comes free, and the two of you can move it aside.

Here's a closer look at the condition the hinge was in. As you can see, it's in pretty bad shape. We just want to spray these bolts with some penetrating oil. This is going to help to remove them. Now, you just want to use a 13 millimeter socket and a ratchet to just remove these two bolts. We'll fast-forward as he removes these. Now, what you want to do is you just want to pull this bracket off. This one just comes right off. Just move it around a little bit. Then, we'll fast-forward as he removes the two 13 millimeter bolts on the opposite side. This hinge is a little bit harder to get off. He's having to use a flat blade screwdriver to kind of pry it from the truck. There it is.

Now, what you need to do is you need to remove the two 13-millimeter bolts on the tailgate itself. We'll fast-forward as he removes these two. The clip should just come right off. We'll just fast-forward as he removes the other two bolts and the clip on this side.

Here are, obviously, the new hinges on the bottom and the old hinges on the top. The hinges from 1A Auto are going to be an exact replacement, and they're going to bolt-in just like the original and work a whole lot better.

So you can see here, he's just pointing out that they're marked "left" and "right." The left side is going to go on your driver's side, and you're going to want to take the shim off the old hinge there and just put that on to the new one. What he is doing right here is he's just putting some anti-sieze onto those bolts. You just want to put that shim and hinge into place and put the bolts into place. We'll just fast-forward here as he tightens up those 13 millimeter bolts. Now, you want to follow the same process on the other side, just putting the anti-sieze on the bolts, putting the hinge into place and tightening those bolts.

Again, you follow the same process, this time, for the hinges on the actual tailgate itself. You're going to want to put the round, the full-circle end on to the driver's side of the tailgate and the half one on the opposite side. We'll just fast-forward through this process.

Now, you're going to want the second person again, and you're going to put the driver's side end on first and angle the other side up and on to the hinge, and then connect those cables on either side of the truck. As you can see, everything looks a lot better now.

Now, replaced the tailgate cable. This one is missing the lock tab. It's real beat up. So I'm going to start. I can undo it from up here by just lifting the tailgate up, pushing it over that, lay it down. I'm going to do these one at a time so the other one on the other side will help hold the tailgate in place. I need to remove this bolt here. It needs a 13 millimeter socket. So it’s getting pretty loose. I can take it out with my fingertips. Put that bolt aside—I don't want to lose it. There's our old cable.

This is our old tailgate cable from our vehicle; this is our brand new 1AAuto.com. See, it's similar in design. Same length, so this will work great and hold our tailgate up.

Let's take our new cable and original bolt. There's a washer underneath there. There's a small washer under here that kind of fell out of place. Take a small flat bladed screwdriver and just hold it back up Where it belongs. There it is. Put my bolt through the cable and the cable in the hole. Got to tighten this down until it stops. The bolt has a shoulder on it so this can move. Now we can reconnect it and move these to lift the tailgate up. Place it over, push it in because that lock tab is there, and then we're going let it come down, and now it's locked into place. The cable is replaced. So the other side is going to be the exact same procedure.

So we're going to lift up on this one because it's not broken, lift up on the tailgate, push it out. Remove this bolt. I'm just going to take it out with my fingers. Place it all to the side, take our brand new one from 1AAuto.com. That little washer has fallen down. Pull this up, thread the bolt in, and tighten down with my socket ratchet. There we go. To reinstall this lift up on the tailgate, push it down, now it's locked into place and both cables are replaced.

Okay, to start this job, let's just compare it, make sure we're dealing with the correct part. This looks great. The next thing we're gonna wanna do is remove our tail lamp. To do that, use a Phillips head screwdriver and remove both those mounting bolts. Grab the lens. Carefully pull it away. Grab some penetrant. Go ahead and spray this down.

Let's use our 15-millimeter wrench right back here to hold this nut and our T40 Torx bit to take this off. There we go. Go ahead and grab that. Slide it in. Take your nut. We're gonna go ahead and put this together but we're gonna leave it nice and loose. The reason for that is because I want it to be able to move around. The next thing we're gonna wanna do is close the tailgate. When the latch comes up, it's gonna bring this to exactly where it lines up perfectly, and then we'll just go ahead and try to snug this at that point so we know exactly where it needs to go. Close this. All right. So, that's latched in. That seems like its exactly where it needs to be. And snug this. Go ahead and snug it up.

Put our tail lamp back in here. Lined up. Start and bolt the screws. After you've done that, go ahead and snug them right up. Okay, let's test it. Perfect.

When you go to install this, you're going to put the bottom in first so that the pitons go down into here, they'll latch in and then just roll it in and it'll latch. So with this, in. So now from inside the bed, you can see the backside of the tailgate, we're just gonna kind of wiggle the handle around until we can see our bolt holes. Grab your bolts, go ahead and start all three of them in before you tighten any of them down. Let's go ahead and snug them up.

Going to replace this handle, tailgate handle, on this Chevy pickup truck. The bezel has already broken off on this vehicle. It's pretty common for them to break off. This is a brand new bezel from 1AAuto.com.

The way it fits in here if this truck had the bezel, these two little tabs on the bottom slide in these two little holes here. There’s push tabs up top here. And it would sit in like this. These tabs would lock underneath the sheet metal. If you were trying to remove it, carefully take a small screwdriver and push it in here on either side to release these tabs. Most likely if this bezel is old, it's just going to break on you if you're trying to replace this handle. You should probably have one of these on hand before you try to replace this handle.

Let's get into replacing this handle. After I sprayed some rust penetrant on these clips so that they'll move more freely, I'm going to push them down with my index finger. I'm not going to pull the rod out of this yet. It will just slide out, but I want to leave it in there, because I need the latch to work still. But it's easier to pop these off while this latch is attached to the sheet metal so it's not moving around on me. Now I can still open the latch and lower the tailgate.

There's two bolts here, and there's a third bolt that's hidden under this plastic bed liner, which is held in with these Phillip head screws that are all around it. I'm going to remove these, take off the plastic bed liner, and get to these three bolts that are back here. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove these. If you had a painted on bed liner, you may have to take a razor blade and cut around these bolts, but since this is a plastic one this plastic piece has to come off. These are the final two bolts.

I've removed all the screws that are holding this plastic on. These bolts are also holding the top of the latch. Start by taking these out. This is a 13mm socket. Lift this plastic up, put it in the bed of the truck so it's out of the way. And you'd see the final bolt. I'm also just going to hold onto the latch, because it's going to be pretty loose. Lift up the tailgate.

Since I've already freed these, I'm going to pull the rods out that go to the latches. This latch will slide right out of the opening, and you just have to maneuver it out. It's a little tight.

This is our old handle. This is our old handle from the vehicle, and here's our brand new one from 1AAuto.com. See, same exact design, same three bolt holes, same spring, same style black textured plastic. This will fit great and work great for you. This is a brand new bezel from 1AAuto.com. It goes around the tailgate handle like this, matches, same black texture.

If yours is broken off, this will replace it and make your truck look new again. Take our new handle, slide it up into place, align it up with the original bolt hole and go inside the bed. I'm going to capture this bolt here so that it doesn't move too much around on me. I'm not going to fully tighten it, I'll just leave it loose. I just want the handle in place.

Now I can push these little control rods up here that work the latches on either side, and get this one in to move that around a little bit. It's going to slide right back in there, pushed in. Then this goes up to lock it in place. Same thing on the other side. Adjust this over, can move this around a little bit, and do that. These are a little rusty. Push them in place, flip this around, and lock. Now I can open the tailgate again.

I can see the handle is lined up with the holes here. See it moving there? I'm going to hold it where I want it. I'm going to tighten this one, because once I put the plastic over it. I won't be able to get to it. Once it feels tight, I'm going to stop. We can lay out plastic bed liner back down, fits right into place. I'm going to replace these two bolts, tighten up the last bolts, real tight. I'm just going to stop, same thing with the other one.

And go and replace the rest of the Phillip head screws that are holding the plastic bed liner trim in. With the bed liner reinstalled, I can close the tailgate. Now would be a good time while you can get in here, to spray some lubricant on the hinge. That works really well. I'm just going to wipe up some of this oil that spilled. We can install our new bezel, and put the two tabs in these bottom openings here, and then snap it into these two top tabs, flip it up and over, just like that. You can open the handle a little bit. Whoops. A little tricky. New bezel is installed.

Now to get started on replacing our tailgate cable right here, I like to prop it up a little bit. I'll use something nice and soft like wood. If you want to use a piece of cloth in between there to protect your paint, it's probably a great idea. The next thing we're gonna do is remove this bolt right here, which is holding this in. And then we'll go ahead up here. Almost out. There we go.

Just come up to this upper portion and you're gonna want to have something nice and flat like this, because if you get right behind here, you can bend up this tab, slide this, and unlock it. Perfect. So next, what we're gonna do is we're gonna take our bolt and the circled end of our cable. Slide it through just like this. Go ahead and start it in there and just snug it up. There we go. This can still pivot, that's very important.

Next, what we're gonna do is just lift up slightly on the tailgate, put this over the bobble there, lock it in, make sure it's completely locked. This needs to be locking it in. Give it a nice test. Perfect.

In this video, we'll be installing a tailgate cable on a 2004 GMC Sierra. It's basically the same as any GMC Sierra or Silverado from 1999 to 2006. The only tool you'll need is a 1/2 inch wrench.

Open up the tailgate. You got a bolt here. It's a ½ inch bolt. Remove that. If it's frayed, you can replace it. Not a difficult thing to replace at all. Most people can do it. If you're wondering how, that's how. A couple of keys, make sure if you're replacing one, the other one's in good shape. You don't want the tail gate to fall because if it falls, it will hit the bumper and it will get dented. Don't take them off both at the same time.

Just one little thing: When you're tightening it, you see the tailgate cable's made to go around the flint in this bolt. You need to lift up and make sure the tailgate cable goes on the bolt, and then tighten it. This allows that to keep moving. If you're tightening it up with getting it in that right spot, basically what will happen is your tailgate will just going to stay like this. This would end up pinching into there and probably damaging and scratching things. That's about it.
