Customer Q&A
Is it safe to drive without sway bars? Is it safe to drive without a front stabilizer bar?

Hello, I will say no to this question. This is a state inspection item in most states. The purpose is to stabilize the vehicle to prevent excessive body lean or sway. These parts are important and even more critical in the case of evasive driving i.e. avoiding a collision by hard steering.

In my experience and opinion, my answer to your two questions is "NO". Sway bars and stabilizer bars have a direct impact on the stability, handeling, stopping and conering (turning) ability of the vehicle. This is especially true on rough roadways. When turning sharply the vehicle may loose stability and overturn when the outboard wheel leaves the ground due to a missing sway (torsion) bar. The sway bar and stabilzer bars are designed to keep the outboard wheel on the ground by transfering load from the inside corner of the vehicle through torsion in the bar. Driving on a rough roadway without Sway and stabilizer bars will make steerig and handling control difficult due to wheel hop. Braking on a rough road results in wheel hopping, which extends stopping distance by a significant amount. Hope this helps.
