Created on:
Tools used
Adjustable Wrench
15mm Socket
18mm Socket
Ratchet
1. Remove the rear shocks
Raise and secure your vehicle, and jack up the control arm.
Take the spare tire out so its not in your way.
Remove the two bolts on each side of the shock.
Use a breaker bar and a socket and a combination wrench on the other side of the bolt to remove the bolt.
Repeat on the top side, using an 18 mm wrench and a 15 mm socket and ratchet/breaker bar.
2. Install the new shocks
Mount the shocks in and thread the two bolts through each end.
Bolt them down with your socket and ratchet and wrench.
Torque the bolts nice and tight, consulting your owner’s manual for the specification.
Replace the spare tire and lower your vehicle.
Brought to you by 1AAuto.com, your source for quality auto replacement parts and the bets service on the internet. Hi, I'm Mike Green. I'm one of the owners of 1AAuto. I want to help you save time and money repairing and maintaining your vehicle. I'm going to use my 20 plus years experience restoring and repairing cars and trucks like this to show you the correct way to install parts from 1AAuto.com. The right parts installed correctly, that's going to save you time and money. Thank you and enjoy the video.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the rear shocks on this '98 Durango, same as any '98 to '03 Durango. You'll need 15 and 18 millimeter, either sockets and ratchets or combination wrenches will work as well. Rear shocks on one of these Durangos, actually pretty easy. I've got a bolt down here and a bolt right up there. Get your jack up and put your vehicle on jack stands and then support your side that you're going to do with the jack. Also, it will help to remove your spare tire. It gives you a lot better access to that bolt there. We'll coat the bolt ends with penetrating oil and let them sit for a little bit. If you have a nice big breaker bar, that's the best method. The bolt size is 15 millimeter and this is an 18 millimeter. I'm going to put my 15 millimeter socket and ratchet. Just going to show you a method that if you don't have a big breaker bar, you can just use a regular wrench and then take another wrench and hook it on to your wrench. This give you a lot more leverage. Carefully and controlled pull. Okay. You should be able to loosen up the bolt and then remove it all the way. For the top side, you're going to want an extension and the hardest thing kind of is these bolts are a little bit rusty. Just want to make sure you get your wrench on there. You may have to reach up and really push it on. That's an 18 millimeter wrench on that side then a 15 millimeter socket and ratchet.
This actually came pretty easily. The wrench actually just kind of holds against that bolt down there and remove it. There's a bolt and there's a nut off. Now, again, I have this supported down here. Just take my wrench to pull the bolts out and you pull the shock down. Okay, this is just kind of video mule car so we're not going to put new shocks in it. Just show you how to replace them. To replace, just reverse the procedure. You can see these are gas shocks. We'll probably have to push them up a little bit. It's kind of weak but put them up a little bit. Make sure the bolt is in place. Reach up and start the bolt up top. Then the one down here in the bottom. Just pull as tight as you can with the ratchet. Make sure it's on the bolt good. Tighten it, nice and tight. 15 millimeter with the extension and 18 millimeter wrench and tighten it up, this time using the stabilizer link to hold the wrench. As it gets tighter, what I'll do is get my wrench right next to this bolt here. Now the bolt from the link is holding the outside wrench. It's nice and tight.
We hope this helps you out. Brought to you by www.1AAuto.com, your source for quality auto replacement parts and the bets service on the internet. Please feel free to call us toll-free, 888-844-3393. We're the company that serves you on the internet and in person.

Would these be good for non-extreme offroading. Or are they only for everyday roads?April 20, 2019

They are the equivalent of what comes on your vehicle stock. I put mine on a stock 4x4 dodge Dakota and take it fishing, camping and hunting. Mostly dirt roads. Hope this helps.

These are made to the same OE specifications that came on your vehicle originally. These will be direct replacements and will fit and function the same. You should be able to do some off roading such as dirt roads, mud, and rocky terrain.
