In this video I'm going to show you how to replace the mirror on this 98 Dodge Ram, pretty much the same as 94 to 01. In this vehicle we do upgrade the mirror with a set of towing. Keep in mind 1AAuto.com does sell all type of mirrors from the regular replacement to nicer upgrade of tow mirrors. Tools you'll need are 10mm Socket with Ratchet and extension, a Philip screwdriver, and either a putty knife or a door panel clip tool. You may use both, I did use both because the door panels are kind of on their tight, then a flat blade screwdriver, as well as needle nose pliers if you have some issue with the door panel clips as I did.
Start out, behind the door handle there's a 10mm or T30 torx bolt, and then a Philip, two Philips screws in the door pull cap, and then a Philip screw at the top corner. Fast forward we use a 10mm socket with a Ratchet extension on the door handle bolt, and then Philip screw driver on the other three screws, and as you can see the ones inside that pull cup can be a little bit challenging, but we pull through him. These panels always, usually nice and tight against the doors. I start with the putty knife and slide it in, and slide it down; you feel the clip.
Then you pull with both of your hand on the door, and the putty knife you'll feel it pop a little bit and then you take a door panel clip tool, or if you don't have one of these, continue with your putty knife, stick it in feel for another clip, pull it out, put it up in. Keep repeating. You repeat pulling those clips, all the way around the edge of the door up the back and then also back up the front.
Okay now here I'm reaching up. There's a couple of clips going up at the top, more towards the center of the door panel. You can either reach up in like that, try to get them with the clip tool or just pull the door panel from the top. Okay once you're on the backside here, the little button. That'll be easiest. Take a flat blade screwdriver, okay and push down the button pull out on your lead, up here is your mirror switch the button right on the inside, pull it up and out. Okay it comes off. I can see here surprisingly, none of my clips came out so I'm going to use my door panel clip tool, okay now use needle nose pliers, pull them the rest of the way out. Okay they either go on, like that or slide in like that.
Also your connector down here, little button on the inside. Maybe use a little screwdriver to press that button, pull out that connector. Now we're inside. There's three 10mm nuts. Fast forward. Through removing those three nuts with my 10mm socket with a Ratchet and extension. Probably your mirror is broken so you're not that concerned about it. Pull the mirror off. Push your harness plug through. Here it comes, up and off. New mirror from 1A Auto. We're going with the towing mirror upgrade on this truck. We do sell the regular replacement ones, just like the original. This is the later style, slide out, or flip out tow mirror.
Offers you a good angle for viewing and for towing, and it also has, this vehicle has the clearance light. We do offer these as well as just the regular replacement as I said. Obviously if you reinstall, we're going to put the harnesses through. Just hold it for a moment, I'm just going to thread a bolt on here. These mirrors have a tendency for the wires to get pinch when you're installing them. After you put that little nut in, just kind of separate your mirror off in the car little bit, look down in there. You can't really see what I'm doing, but just make sure that your harness is pushed out of the way; it's not close to either of the mounting studs. Make sure it kind of routes right between them. It doesn't get too close to either one of them.
Because this mirror is so big, we provide you with a reinforcement plate. Putting to harness through that. Going to speed it up here, laugh at myself a little bit as I kind of try and contort myself getting this mirror on by myself. With these upgraded tow mirrors, they require that reinforcement plates was a little bit of a challenge to get the plate on there and start the nuts. That's basically what I'm doing. If you're just replacing it with a regular replacement OE style then you don't even have to worry about this step it's just putting the mirror on, and starting the three nuts.
Again be careful with your wiring harness. Don't pull it hard through or pull It tight. You just want to kind of make sure it's through all the way. You don't want to pull it tight, because pulling it tight, pull against one of the mounting studs and you can pinch your wires. Continue with fast forward. As we just tighten up the three 10mm nuts to hold it, and you want to tighten this up firm. Be careful not to over-tighten them though. Okay, this is all designed to plug in. Plug in our mirror. Okay, on the backside you can see we replaced all our clips, put it in place connect our mirror.
First connect our power window switch, and put the panel into place. Put our locks through. Okay and then you can kind of peak behind. Make sure the pins are lined up with the hole, and then just push them in all the way around. Okay I just want to kind of speed up, put in that top screw and I apologize I didn't do a very good job filming that. It was kind of in the way. Then put in your door pull cup, and replace the two screws for that. Once that's done then you take your door handle and the 10mm bolt. Put that back in, tighten up nice and firm, and you should be all set.
