Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the tail gate cables on this 2004 Dodge Ram, same as most of the Dodge Rams of this era. The tools you'll need are a T45 Torx driver or a bit with a ratchet handle, and a small screwdriver and pair of pliers possibly.
Replacing your tail gate's a pretty easy process. Lift up a little tab, and slide your tail gate up. Now make sure that your tail gate is supported. Make sure your other tail gate cable is good or you support it because if you let your tail gate down and it hits the bumper it can bend your tail gate.
Now this is a T45 Torx bolt and just note how this bracket goes in, a little bracket to keep your tail gate from rotating too far and getting pinched. If you want to save this hardware, take a little screwdriver like this, and pry it up under this little washer. Now use a pair of needle nose pliers and just kind of pull on this washer, twist it and break it off.
A new cable from 1A Auto is all the same. It has the same end on that end and the same locking end there. You just put it onto the posts, lock it into place and on like that. Oops I, think I did it wrong, like that. This is a shouldered bolt so you want to make sure you get the cable on to it. I'm pulling the cable out against the bolt and tightening up.

Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks!
In this video, we're going to show you tailgate cable replacement. This is a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500, and it's the same for any 2003-2008, as well as a couple of the other years of the 3500 and 2500.
Items you'll need include a new tailgate cable from 1AAuto.com, flat blade screwdriver, and a T45 torx bit and ratchet.
To replace your tailgate cable, lift up on your tailgate a little bit and this tab is a little bent so I'm just using a screwdriver. Help me pry it up, pull it off, and make sure you have something supporting it where you have a good tailgate cable on the other side.
There's a T45 bolt. Remove that. Best to have a socket bit and a ratchet. The old one comes off.
New cable from 1AAuto. Pull it right out. Cable is exactly the same and then there's a little locking washer.
So, we can put the cable right on and then this goes with the long side there so you can put it here. Put the bolt through and then put the locking washer on, and then I need to loosen this up a little bit. This is a shouldered bolt, so make sure that the cable comes out on the collar of the bolt and then tighten it up.
Now that it's tightened, it should move freely.
Thanks for tuning in. We hope this video helped you out. Next time you need parts for your car, please visit 1AAuto.com. Also check out our other helpful how-to and diagnosis videos.
