Hi, I'm Mike Green. I'm one of the owners of 1A Auto. I want to help you save time and money repairing or maintaining your vehicle. I'm going to use my 20-plus years experience restoring and repairing cars and trucks like this to show you the correct way to install parts from 1AAuto.com. The right parts installed correctly: that's going to save you time and money. Thank you and enjoy the video.
In this video, we're going to show you how to remove and put back on the outside door handle on this 2004 Trailblazer. Tools you'll need are a medium and small flat blade screwdriver as well as a 10 millimeter socket with ratchet and extension.
Start with a regular screwdriver. Put it up under, and give a quick little pry. Do the same thing here. Pry that up. It has two clips, front and back. Then you want to turn it over here, and you want to unplug all these harnesses. Basically you just have little thumb tabs. Pull them up. Skip that one. This one pulls out fairly easy. Use your screw driver. Just pry that up a little bit. With that off, then over here, put the screw driver on this tab, pry it up a little bit. It pops right out. This comes out. Now, around your door handle, here, you're going to see some little tab, little slots. You're going to inset a small screwdriver, push down with your screw driver, and then pull out with your hand, work your hand underneath. There's another tab right back here. Push down. Pull out. Then there's a couple up top. Those ones you push up. There's one more right here. This whole thing comes out. If you have the memory seat and everything, you can now pull this whole harness right up out. There are two 10mm bolts, one there and then one way down in there. Use a10 mm socket with a extension and ratchet. This one's really easy to get to. Pull it up and out. For this one, I'm going to start it as much as I can. I just felt it fall which is okay. Once you have those out, then you can start up here with your hand. Just work it underneath this triangle. Pull out. Then just work your hand under the door panel. It will get harder and harder to slide under. Just pull. Keep working your hand under. Pull. Work your hand under. Pull. Actually, here's my bolt from that armrest. Continue to work your hand under. Pull out, and your door panel comes off. You're going to pull back your water shield. I'm going to pull back carefully. You don't want to rip it.
To remove the door handle, you're going to have to take off two 10mm nuts. You can see one right in through that hole. Then the other one is . I have to get up through here, and you can see it right there. Then before you take those off, you see right down there, there's a little clip and a rod that goes into the lock. So, you just use your finger, push that clip off, and pull that rod out. Then, back here, you see that little yellow clip there. For that little yellow clip, just reach in with your finger, you can pull that side off, and you pull this rod out. Use a 10mm socket with a extension and a ratchet. Go right in. Get to that first nut. Reach up through here and make sure that nut comes out in my socket. Then I'll take the extension off and reach up behind here. We'll fast forward as I unscrew that one. Pull out on the handle. Pull it out and down. This whole rod comes with it.
Obviously this handle's in fine shape, so I'm just going to show you how to switch it over. You would obviously want to switch this rod over. Push that clip down. Take the rod out. You'd also want to switch your lock over by just pulling up on this clip here. Then your lock comes out. You put it into your new door handle the same way. Actually, on the new door handle, put the clip in. On the new door handle, you can actually start with the clip in. Just push the lock right in. Obviously, put the rod back on.
When you go to put this in here, you want this rod on the other side of the lock rod. Put it down in. Put the handle in. I'm going to take my first 10mm nut, and I'm going to reach up in and start it. For this rear bolt, you can either reach up in there or just put your nut into a socket with your extension. Use the nut to feel your way in there. Start it on there. Use a little fast forward as I tighten up those two 10mm nuts and when you tighten them, you want them nice and firm. They don't have to be extremely tight, though. Reconnect your lock rod. We want to take the rod and pull it over. Get it into place. You push up on the rod a little bit, and then latch that.
Get our water shield back up in place. One thing you want to make sure is that this pole right here is nice and clear. I'm going to fast forward here through putting the door panel back on just in the interest of keeping the video a little bit on the short side. Once you get it off, it's pretty easy to get back on.
