Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the driver side exterior door handle on this 2003 Mercury Mountaineer. It's the same part and similar process on these Mountaineers from 2002 to 2010. The items you'll need for this is a new exterior door handle from 1AAuto.com, a 7 and 11mm socket and ratchet, a flat blade screwdriver, and a 90 degree pick.
You want to make sure that your courtesy lights don't stay on so you don't drain you battery. Just make sure you turn those off. Pry out from the bottom of this panel with a flat blade screwdriver. Then just slide the panel towards the front of the vehicle and off the door handle. Then lift up on the front of your switch panel and then slide it forward and up. Then push the tabs on these harnesses and disconnect them. For this last one, you're going to want to use a flat blade screwdriver and push in on the tab and pull it free. Your switch panel is free. Now you want to remove this 7mm bolt and these two 7mm bolts right here. We'll just fast-forward as Mike does that. Pry out the switch and then just pry out the tab on the harness and disconnect the harness. Then feed that back through the door panel. Lift the door panel up and then pull it back. Push the tab on this harness to disconnect it, and your door panel is free.
Peel back this top corner of your water shield and you can see that Mike uses a razor blade to help separate the adhesive. Now, reach in here and just open up this yellow clip and it helps to use a pick tool as you can see. Then, you just pull the rod from that clip and then remove this 11mm nut and this 11mm nut right here. We'll just fast forward as Mike does that. Now, open up your door handle so that you can get the lever outside of the door and then you just pull your door handle free and pull the rod up and out.
I've got my socket and ratchet extension on the inside and you can see I took the door handle off, but the studs stayed here. I'm actually just going to take a set of locking pliers, lock them on to the studs. Just wipe down the area where the door handle goes. Something you don't want to do is shut your door while there's no door handle, but if you happen to, just look down in and find that yellow clip that you unhooked the rod from, and reach down. Let's see here. Just press it with your thumb and open the door up.
Here's our original door handle. At 1A Auto, we sell the chrome door handles. We also sell just a regular black handle that you can paint to match. Obviously, the black door handle, if you have a broken door handle and you just want a handle that works, you can mount the black one on as is and it's fine. If you did want to paint it to match, you can be as crude as just going to the hardware store and finding some paint that's a decent match for your color, paint the handle. You would want to take the gasket off when you paint it. If you want a closer match, you can go to an automotive paint store and purchase paint that matches closer and finish it that way.
We're going to put this chrome handle on. Just take your rod, twist it, and pull it out. Take the new handle and then, again, twist it and put it in and then put your handle down in. You want to put the front in and then push, pull the handle out and push the counterweight in there. Then, line up the stud, put it in, and make sure the gasket is lined up correctly. Take your lock and bend it down off of that rod, so now it's free. Now, you can put it up in place and on the stud for the door handle. Now, the lock's in place and we'll put our first nut on here. You're probably won't be able to see this but I'm just going to take the nut for the front one, the door handle, and put that on as well. We'll just fast forward as Mike tightens up those two 11mm nuts. Make sure your lock rod is in and then just pull it in to the lock. Then put your handle rod back in place and now push up on the rod a little bit, and down on the latch. Push it in and lock it in place. Just make sure your door's unlocked.
To replace your door panel, just reconnect this harness, and make sure you push the harness for your mirror switch through. Then push the door panel into place and slide it down. We'll fast-forward as Mike replaces those three 7mm bolts and tightens them up. Reconnect this switch and push it back into place. Then reconnect your switch panel and slide the back end first. Then push the front end down. Then slide this panel back over the door handle and push those tabs back into place. Then push in the front. You're all set.

Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace a rear exterior door handle on this 2003 Mercury Mountaineer and it's a similar process on these Mountaineers from 2002 to 2010, as well as on the Explorers in the same years and we show on the driver's side but the passenger side is the same procedure. The items you'll need for this are a new rear exterior door handle from 1AAuto.com, a flat blade screw driver and a 7 and 11 millimeter socket and ratchet.
Start off by prying out on the bottom of this panel and then pulling out to release the clips. Then slide it towards the front of the car and off the door handle. Now roll this panel out while pulling up on the front. Slide it forward and then just push the tab on this harness and disconnect it. Then remove this 7mm bolt and this 7mm bolt right here. Now lift your door panel up and out and your door panel's free.
Peel back your water shield in this top corner, and you can see Mike uses a razor blade to help separate the adhesive. Using a flat blade screwdriver pry this clip open and then pull the door handle rod free. To give you more room while you're trying to remove the exterior door handle, we recommend you just lift up this yellow clip on the back of the interior door handle and pull your lock rod free.
Two nuts hold the door handle. One you can access through here, which is this one here and then there's one way back as well. We'll just fast forward as Mike removes both of those. Now open your door handle while pulling it free from the door and by opening it, you're helping that lever at the top to just fit out of the door as you can see. You can push it down with your hand once you get it out far enough and the door handle pulls free.
You may or may not run into this. It's happened on two doors with this vehicle but the stud stayed in there. So we're just going to take a good set of locking pliers, lock on, and, because it's a little easier I'm going to reach through here. I'm holding the nut on the other end with a wrench and turning the stud for the door handle out.
At 1A Auto, our replacement door handles come in black which you can just mount on there and it will be a perfectly good replacement. You could also paint to match. You could be as crude as just going to a hardware store and getting a can of spray paint that closely matches and doing it that way. If you want a better match, go to an automotive part store that has a paint department, they can help you match the paint and put it in an air-charged can and refinish the handle. You would want to remove the gasket when you refinish it. Another option that we have at 1A Auto is, we do sell chrome replacement door handles okay and so this will be add a little bling. Get one for all four doors and put them on there and they're going to mount just like the original. Our original door handle's fine so we're just going to put it back in but all you need to do is take this rod and pull it out, put it into your new door handle, back in, put the rod down in. Put the front in first and then you kind of pull your door handle open and push this rod down in. Okay, and watch the studs to see that they go through the door. Now the handle's on. Actually you're just going to start this one on by hand first. We'll fast forward as he tightens up both those 11 millimeter nuts.
You want to make sure that your door is in the unlocked position. Back is locked and this way is unlocked. Then, you want to hold your lock/unlock switch here, because that's unlocked and that's locked. Hold it in the unlock position, pull it forward to make sure it's unlocked, put it into your clip, and then just lock the clip down. Reclip the door handle rod and just close the yellow clip over it. Push your water shield back into place.
The door panel is held in by all these hooks, so if you take the water shield off for any reason, just make sure that everything is lined up so the hooks can go in easily. You can actually kind of hook the bottom ones on first. Just push the panel up, you may have to move it up a little bit, make sure it goes against the door all the way, and slide it down. Now replace those two 7mm bolts and tighten them up. The top one helps if you feed it back into place with an extension. Reconnect the harness and this tab slides in first. Take this panel and just slide it behind your door handle. Push those tabs back into place. Push the clips back in on the front.

In this video, we're going to be working with our 2006 Ford Explorer. We're going to show you how to remove and replace your rear exterior door handle. This information is the same for the driver and the passenger side, as well as being the same for the chrome, textured or paint-to-match handle.
If you like this video, please click subscribe. We have a ton more information on this truck, as well as many other makes and models. If you need this part for your vehicle, you can follow the link down in the description over at 1AAuto.com.
Here are the items you'll need for this repair: 7-11mm socket, ratchet, socket extension, flat blade screwdriver
Remove these two trim covers here to expose the seven millimeter bolts we need to remove to get our door panel off. You can do this with a small flat blade screwdriver, or, if you want to keep your interior in nice shape, you can use one of the trim tools from our interior trim tool removal set available from 1A Auto. Put that trim tool on the bottom edge here. We'll start at the back. Pry out the clips. Do the same thing here. Just get under one edge. Pop that cover off.
With these covers removed, we can access the two seven millimeter screws in the upper portion of the door handle, the two in the door pull here, and a fifth one at the bottom. We'll remove these with a seven millimeter socket ratchet and extension. Using the same interior trim tool, pop up on the tabs for the window switch and disconnect the electrical connector on the bottom. With the screws removed and the switch out, lift up on the door panel and lay it backwards. Push down on the ears that secure the door release cable in place. You want to use a small flat blade screwdriver to make sure you get some good leverage on there. Push one side in and pull the cable partially out to hold that side compressed before moving onto the other side, at which point you can remove the entire cable from the panel. Pull it out and let the cable through the slot in the top. Rotate it and remove it from the latch. You can now remove your door panel from the vehicle.
Remove the four seven millimeter screws securing the speaker to the door with a socket, ratchet, and extension. With the screws out, carefully remove the speaker from the door. Disconnect the connector on the back and remove your speaker.
Disconnect the motor connector at the bottom. You can use this hook portion of the trim tool or a pair of side cutters or a screwdriver to get behind the pin on the connector. Pop it out of the door. We'll do the same thing for the one on the window switch. With all your harnesses disconnected, you can start removing the weathershield inside of the door. Be careful, as this foam material is a little easy to tear. Keep your hand right where you're pulling to try to prevent the foam from ripping, creating leaks. Inside of the door panel toward the rear where it latches against the body is the door latch assembly.
You'll see a yellow clip here with a latch rod going from the bottom of the door handle into it. With a small flat blade screwdriver, pop this tab open to release the rod. We'll reach through the access hole at the front of the panel for the front nut with an 11 millimeter deep socket and extension and a ratchet. Be sure to hold the door handle into place at the front when you're removing the last nut so it doesn't fall out. Once the nut is removed, lift the bottom of the handle out first and remove the handle from the door.
Here we have the original equipment door handle that we removed from our 2006 Ford Explorer, and we have a variety of replacement options available for this. There's a smooth black, which would be ideal for a paint to match, or you could use it on a black Explorer. A textured black door handle will works if you put all four of them on the car. It looks nice. Or you can upgrade all of your door handles or replace a chrome door handle with this chrome replacement option.
All of these door handles, except for the finishes, are exactly the same. You can see we have the same latch mechanism on the back. the same mounting locations, the same hook for our latch rod, which we will have to reuse from our old part and the handles themselves are all the same in the front.
If you have a broken, cracked, damaged or just a poor appearance on your door handle, these replacement parts from 1A Auto are available individually to replace one broken handle or can be purchased as a kit if you would like to upgrade or change the look of your doors. You'll have to reuse the old latch rod from your door handle. Simply unhooks from that plastic clip. In this particular instance, we're going to be replacing our old door handle with the black smooth or paint-to-match door handle, but this procedure will be the same for the chrome or textured handles. All you have to do is hook your old latch rod right back into the new handle. Your new door handle may come with a thread protector over the studs. You'll have to remove that for install.
Place your new door handle in. It may help to open the handle to help get that inside. Once the studs are lined up, reach into the panel and start the two 11 millimeter nuts by hand. Using an 11 millimeter socket and ratchet, we'll go into the door panel to tighten up the nut at the back. You can use this same setup to tighten the one at the front, but I find it a little bit easier to use an extension and go through that access hole in the door panel. Once the nuts are tightened up, pull down tight on your latch rod while pushing up on this mechanism. Reinstall it into its retainer and snap the clip into place.
Send your wiring back through the openings in the weather shield along with our door handle cable. Line it up and press the adhesive back on. Reconnect the motor harness and snap the clips into the holes in the opening here. Reattach the window switch wire harness the same way.
Reattach the connector to your speaker. Line it up and reinstall seven millimeter screws by hand before tightening them down with your socket and ratchet. Reinstall the cable into the handle.
Send the cable through the slot here. Push the retainers into place until they snap. Sometimes one of these will get caught in there and it'll stay partially compressed, so make sure you wiggle it a little bit, and make sure that it's fully seated and that the window harness comes up through the opening here. Line up your door lock pin. Set the panel into place. Push it down until all the tabs lock into the door. Reconnect your window switch.
Install the panel back into the door until it snaps into place. Reinstall your five seven millimeter screws into the door panel. There's the one black screw at the bottom. It's got the plastic thread on it. Your four machine screws, we'll have two going into the door pull here and two into the handle. A good trick for getting the two screws in at the top, because they're a little difficult up inside there, way at the back, and they'll fall down inside of the door panel if they fall out of your socket, is to just take a little bit of grease. I'm using brake grease, but you can use wheel bearing grease. Coat the head of the bolt with it. You don't need to go crazy here. Just make sure you get a little bit on the flat edges. When you install this into your socket, it'll keep the bolt in place. Reinstall the cover on your door pull. It just snaps into place. The same thing with the one up top on the handle. Make sure you hook the front end in first before snapping the back in.

Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace an exterior door handle on this 2003 Mercury Mountaineer. We'll show you on the passenger side, but the driver side is a similar procedure. It's the same part and similar procedure on these Mountaineers from 2002 to 2010. The items you'll need for this is a new exterior door handle from 1AAuto.com, 7mm and 11mm socket and ratchet, flat blade screwdriver, and a 90 degree pick.
Start off by prying out on this panel, and then just slide it off the door handle. Then lift up on the front of your switch panel and just slide it forward. Then push the tab on the harnesses to disconnect them. Now, remove this 7mm bolt and these two 7mm bolts down here. We'll fast-forward as Mike does that. Now, just lift the door panel up and then pull it back and it's free.
Carefully peel back your water shield, and you see Mike's using a razor to just help separate the adhesive.Using a pick, just pry open this clip and then pull the door handle rod free. Then remove this 11mm nut and this 11mm nut right here. We'll fast-forward as Mike does that.
Now pull the door handle from the door and just open it up a little bit to help pull the handle free. Then just pull the door handle rod up and out. This may or may not happen to you, but my stud came out the handle rather than the nut coming off of it, so I'm just going to use a good set of locking pliers here and lock on to it. The stud comes off and the nut comes off.Pull the door handle rod from the old door handle.
Up top is the old door handle. Below is the new one from 1A Auto. You can see they're identical, and they'll fit exactly the same. Okay, so our new handle is obviously black. If you have a broken handle, this will fix your problem easily enough. If you did want to paint it to match, you could do something as crude as just going to a hardware store or something and getting a white paint that matched closely and just spray paint it that way, or you could do an automotive parts store that has a paint department. They could help you match the paint from your vehicle and then you could finish the handle yourself. You would want to take this gasket off if you don't want to paint the gasket otherwise.
Put the rod in, twist it, get it into place, and feed the new door handle down into the door. Then push in the front first. Then open up the door handle, feed the top in, and push it back into place. Then just replace those two 11mm nuts and tighten them up. Reconnect your rod. You want to put it in place. Try and put a little bit of pressure down on the lever you're pushing into, and then push up on the rod just a little bit to make it a little tense back in place and lock the clip.
You've got a number of hooks on the door panel. They go into slots in the door. If you've removed your water shield for any reason, you just want to make sure it's all lined up. You can put the bottom ones on, bottom two, and then just make sure your harnesses come through. Push the door panel in and make sure the front and the back and the top is pushed down, and then reinstall the three 7mm screws. We'll fast-forward as Mike replaces those 7mm bolts and tightens them up.
If you have difficulties starting one of the lower ones, just do the other first one and it should help the other one line up. Plug in your switch panel. Put the back down in first, thrust it down, push it in, and there's a little slot that comes down that this actually hooks into. Put this in, first make sure those back tabs go in, and then make sure it snaps into place.

We're going to remove this trim panel first. Plastic trim tools from 1AAuto.com best way to do it without harming your interior finish. Pull out on this panel. Once you get it out, make sure you're pulling straight, and then it comes off this way. Same thing here with your switch panel. Then disconnect the switches, their tabs, green tab here, and this blue tab here. Looks like this one came right out. Just a little tab on the side. Disconnect it.
Now you want to get this off. Should pull out. There are six 7mm bolts: one, two, there's one missing here, but three, and four, right down to the bottom, five, and six. We'll remove those. Again, using your plastic trim tool, get in underneath of the mirror switch. Clips are on the side. Just get it under there, twist, and it pulls up and out. You do have to rotate it up like that and out. Plastic tab, and disconnect. Make sure you have all your bolts out on the door panel. One of mine just fell out, which is okay. Whole panel comes out and off. Pull your handle to pull the cable out, then grab hold of this little ball here to hold the cable out. Then pull the cable from the door lock. Then use a screwdriver or something to help you release the tabs here.
You'll need to raise your window up, and disconnect your switch again. Pull your shield back far enough to reveal this 6mm bolt, and remove it. That allows you to slide this forward, and hold. Actually, that'll be good enough right there.
Inside the door, use a little pick tool. You could use a screwdriver, too. Release this clip, and pull the rod out. Two 11mm nuts hold the door handle in place. One is right up under here, and a little hard to get to, because the window regulator rail's in the way. Then you can get to the other one very easily right through here. We'll remove those 11mm nuts.
The front one, use a deep 11mm, and go in behind the rail. This back one is really easy to get to, just with an extension on the 11mm deep socket. And remove them. With this back nut off, just pull the lock cylinder right out. Most likely, if your door handle's broken, it's just going to come right out. But if you're looking to upgrade to chrome door handles, pull the bottom out, and the door handle comes out. A lot of times this will happen, that the stud actually comes out from the door handle. A set of locking pliers, and your ratchet and socket, and just take this stuff out.
Original handle from the vehicle, and actually you can see it's in good shape, other than the stud coming out. At 1A Auto, we sell chrome door handles which are a nice upgrade. We also sell handles that are smooth black. You can paint to match your original color, as well as textured black. You can see that the handle from 1A Auto is a quality replacement. It's going to go on there just like the original. We'll take the rod out, put it into the new handle, and we're ready to go.
Good, while you're here, a little cleaner, just clean up the mounting area. Make sure that your lock rod is just over to the side. Put the latch rod down in place, and the top should go in first. Hold the handle out, and look back in where the studs go. Take one of the 11mm nuts, and feed it right back into place, and start it on. Before you put the rear nut in place, put your lock cylinder in place. Then start this nut on. Just take your rod, make sure it's nice and free, and also actuating. The rod right into the clip pole. That's secure, and then this one goes back into the clip. Push up on the rod, then push it into the clip, and lock the clip in place. Put this block back in place.
Make sure that your door lock cable is clipped into the back side, and top on, back of the latch, and the bottom latch. Okay, lock this back in place. Make sure all your harnesses go in there. Put your 6mm bolt back in place. Then you can put your water shield back up. The door panel has a series of hooks that go into slots in the door, so you can put it into place. Make sure your harnesses go through. Put the cable into the door, pull it, and push it through. Make sure your harnesses come up through. Put your door lock button in. Line up all those hooks. Just got to make sure our door lock button goes into the hole. The hooks should all line up and allow the panel to be flush with the door. Make sure your mirror harness comes through, as well, both the front and the back are flush. Push it down into place. Then we can reinstall our six 7mm bolts that hold it in place. For these two that go in at the door handle, we just put some grease on there. That actually is just going to make it so they stay in our socket.
Feed it into place, and start them in. Just clean the grease off the socket, and start the other ones in. On these bottom ones, tighten them. Don't get them too tight, because you'll end up stripping the plastic nuts that they go into. Reconnect your harness leads, green, blue, small black one. Make sure you put it in there correctly. Push it down, and lock it into place. This one hooks on the top first, snaps in place, and then this one snaps right into place. Install the mirror switch, reconnect it down and in. Just make sure we clock it correctly. When it's in the middle position that should be straight up, and push it in.
