In this video, we'll show you how to replace a tailgate cable on this '04 Ford Ranger, same as pretty much any '93 on up Ranger. All you need is a T45 Torx bit and it's a pretty simple replacement.
Tailgate replacement on this ranger is pretty easy. Use a T45 Torx bit. You want to make sure, if you're taking tailgate cables off, that your tailgate is supported because once you remove this tailgate cable, you don't want the tailgate to drop down and get dented on the bumper. My other tailgate cable on the other side is good so I'm going to remove this bolt and lift it up with my knee a little bit. Carefully allow that other tailgate cable to do the work here. Now, here on the upper end, you basically just need to pull this tab back and the cable comes off.
Obviously putting it back on, pull it down, and then put in your T45 bolt. Now, the bolt is shouldered here so you want to make sure that gets into the cable, and it doesn't hang up like that. That'll get your cable pinched. Make sure it goes into the cable. You might have to pull out on the bolt to get it going. I'm actually pulling out with the cable. Now, you tighten the bolt and the cable still flexes

Here are the items you'll need for this repair: flat blade screwdriver, and a T45 Torx driver.
Open up your tailgate, and you should know where you're cables are. They're right here on the side. A lot of times, one of them breaks or they fray, and they can stab you. You just need a T45 Torx driver on a ratchet handle. Remove this bolt.
If you're tailgate cables are broken, just make sure you have something supporting the tailgate while you do this. Then, these little locks can usually be just pulled with your thumb. Take a flat plate screwdriver, pry them up, pull the cable off.
To reinstall, just reverse the procedure. Put the cable on. Lock it down in place. Then start your bolts. Again, it helps to lift up a little bit. These cables do have a side. Cable comes in here. There’s a short distance to this tab, and a longer distance to this tab. You want to have the longer distance facing down. There's a tab right there. Put your bolt in.
This is a shouldered bolt, so you want to make sure you hold the cable out on the bolt while you tighten it up. Once you get it tight, just make sure that the cable does move freely, and make sure the first few times it goes down when you shut the tailgate.

In this video, we're going to show you tailgate replacement on this '96 Ford Ranger, same as any '93 to '97. It's pretty simple. You do need a T45 Torx bit with a ratchet and you may require another flat blade screwdriver as well.
Tailgate replacement, is really pretty easy. Before you do one side, make sure the cable on the other side is working or support the tailgate, because when you take the cable off, you don't want the tailgate to drop down, because you'll scratch and dent it. I'm just kind of lifting up on the tailgate here and you can just pull back and pull the top of the cable off like that. Here are two important things. You need a T45 Torx driver. The other important thing is that these cables have a left and a right to them. The same cable does not fit both sides. I'm going to speed this up here and run into something that you may run into. The bolt comes out a certain way and then it will not come out the rest of the way. It just kind of keeps spinning. I'll show you next how to take care of that. You make it to a point here where you feel like you're endlessly turning and it's not coming out. I did on this one. All is you do is you take a screwdriver or something and pry out and get some force on that bolt to go that way and keep turning it out and eventually it will come out the top.
Obviously, resetting is pretty simple. Like I said, these are different from side to side. You have this like that. It's totally different when it's that way, so you want to put this one. There's a little clamp in here. It just fell down. Put it back up here. There's a little lock washer in here. If you can get it back on, that's good. If you don't get it back in, it's not the biggest deal in the world. I just dropped it right down in there and put your bolt through. Here again, you may have to push on this bolt while you're starting it in. Okay, the bolt's shouldered, so you want to make sure that the cable's all the way out against the head. Once you get it tight, the cable should still turn freely. You need to lift your tailgate a little bit, put cable on and lock it in place.

Easy to install. Cable is smaller than original. Mounting ends similar to OEM. Product works so far. Have not placed heavy load on gate yet.
10 minute swap out. As long as you have a T-45 socket, you're good to go.
The ends on these replacement cables are chrome plated, the originals looked like they were cold dipped. Installation took a whole 5 minutes.
