My Equinox has a chrome piece on top of the mirror assembly. Can this be removed from my vehicle, or do I need to order the mirror assembly with a chrome top?
You would need to order an assembly that has a chrome cap.

Does the housing have the lattice design like the factory one?
Yes, I simply removed the broken mirror and replaced it with the new one using the same screws. Just make sure you have the right tools, luckily I did and only took me an hour to re-place. The only thing I did was to drop off the whole mirror at a paint shop to get the cap painted before I installed it. Hopefully I answered your question.
