Determining whether or not your vehicle is a California emissions or a federal emissions vehicle is pretty straightforward. To do this, you'll want to locate your catalyst sticker under the hood of your vehicle. It'll either be actually on the bottom side of the hood, most GM vehicles have it on the air box, and other vehicles may have it along your radiator support at the front of the engine bay.
All you need to do is see, "This vehicle conforms to California regulations." That means that this vehicle is a California emissions car. Just because you're not in California or are in California doesn't necessarily mean your vehicle will be one way or the other.
Now, our F150 has it down here on the radiator's support, right at the front of the engine bay and you can see here, "This vehicle conforms to US EPA regulations." This means that this vehicle is a federal emissions.
Now, here we have two things that are a little different. Our catalyst is located on the vehicle's air box and this vehicle conforms to US EPA regulations and California regulations. If it conforms to both federal and California emissions, it's considered a California emissions vehicle.

1. Removing the Upstream Oxygen (O2) Sensor
Remove the O2 sensor with an O2 sensor socket and ratchet
If the O2 sensor will not remove, cut the O2 sensor wire and remove it with a 7/8 inch socket
2. Loosening the Exhaust Manifold from the Engine
Remove the two 12mm bolts from the heat shield
Remove the nine 12mm nuts from the exhaust manifold
Remove the 14mm bolt from the catalytic converter bracket
Remove the 10mm bolt from the oxygen sensor bracket
3. Removing the Downstream O2 Sensor
Disconnect the o2 sensor wiring harness
Pull the harness off of its bracket
Remove the O2 sensor with an O2 sensor socket and ratchet
If the O2 sensor will not remove, cut the O2 sensor wire and remove it with a 7/8 inch socket
4. Removing the Catalytic Converter
Raise and secure the vehicle
Remove the three 13mm bolts from the catalytic converter
Pull the catalytic converter up and out
5. Preparing the New Catalytic Converter
Remove the two 12mm bolts from the new heat shield
Pull the heat shield off the new catalytic converter
Remove the 14mm bolt from the old catalytic converter bracket
6. Installing the New Catalytic Converter onto the Engine
Pry out the old catalytic converter gasket with a flat blade screwdriver
Push a new gasket into the exhaust pipe
Pull off the old exhaust gasket
Hang a new exhaust gasket on the studs
Thread the nuts off the bottom of the new catalytic converter
Push the new catalytic converter into place, lining up the studs with the exhaust pipe flange
Push the exhaust manifold onto its studs
Fasten the nine 12mm nuts onto the exhaust manifold
Tighten the 12mm nuts to 25 - 30 foot-pounds of torque
Put the bracket into place on the catalytic converter
Insert the 14mm bolts into the bracket
Put the heat shield into place
Insert the two 12mm bolts into the heat shield
7. Reinstalling the Upstream O2 Sensor
Put the O2 sensor into place
Tighten the 02 sensor with the O2 socket
Insert the 10mm bolt into the oxygen sensor bracket
8. Fastening the Catalytic Converter to the Exhaust Pipe
Fasten the three 13mm nuts onto the catalytic converter
Tighten the 13mm nuts to 25 - 35 foot-pounds of torque
9. Reinstalling the Downstream O2 Sensor
Thread the O2 sensor into place
Tighten the 02 sensor with the O2 socket
Reconnect the O2 sensor wiring harness
Clip the harness into its bracket

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter on this 1998 Honda Civic. Pretty much the same process for the Civics from 1996 to 2000.You'll need a new manifold and catalytic converter assembly from 1AAuto.com, 10 to 14mm sockets and ratchet with an extension, a 7/8 O2 socket, a piece of pipe for leverage, torque wrench, jack, and jack stands. If you have trouble with your O2 sensor you can use clippers that clip the wire and then use a regular deep 7/8 socket to remove the O2 sensor.
Start off using your 7/8 inch O2 socket to remove your upstream O2 sensor here. Just put the socket on the O2 sensor, and then, with a ratchet and an extension, put it down into the socket and remove that sensor. Once it's removed, just set it aside. If you can't get your O2 sensor off with your O2 socket, there is always plan B. Just cut the wire on the O2 sensor and use a regular 7/8 inch socket. If you are forced to do this, you will have to buy a new O2 sensor.
Then you want to remove these two 12mm bolts. Now you need to remove these nine 12mm nuts. We'll fast forward here. We doused them with penetrating oil, let them sit for a little while and now we're just removing them with a socket, ratchet and extension. Now, right here there's a 14mm bolt, just go ahead and remove that. Under the hoses, on this bracket, there's a 10mm bolt. Go ahead and remove that. Then pull those hoses back once you have that bolt removed.
Now lift your vehicle and under here you'll see your downstream O2 sensor. You want to use your O2 socket and just remove that. Once it's removed, just set it aside. Again, if your O2 socket isn't working, you can always cut the wire and use a regular one but you will have to replace the sensor.
Next to where your downstream O2 sensor is, there are these three 13mm nuts go ahead and remove those. You can see we doused them with penetrating oil. If you break these off, it's not too big of a deal because the new manifold and catalytic converter assembly from 1A Auto comes with new studs. Once those bolts are removed, you can maneuver your catalytic converter up and out.
On the right, is the old catalytic converter. On the left, is the new one from 1A Auto. You can see that the gaskets are exactly the same and on the catalytic converters, the heat shield is a little bit different but they'll mount exactly the same. Before you can install the new catalytic converter, you need to first remove these two 12mm bolts so you can get this shield off. Next you need to remove this 14mm bolt securing this bracket to your old catalytic converter. We'll fast forward as Don does this. Now to remove this lower gasket, just use a flat blade screwdriver and pry it out and put your new one down into place.
Pull off your exhaust gasket and put your new one into place there. Just take the nuts off the studs on the bottom and put them aside, then lower your manifold and converter assembly down in. Make sure that you line up the lower studs into the exhaust pipe flange and get them into place. Once you make sure those are in place then line up your top ones and push the manifold on. I'm just going to keep fast forwarding here as Don puts all the nuts back in place and preliminarily tightens them. Use a torque wrench and torque all those nuts to 25 to 30 foot-pounds.
Take the bracket from your old catalytic converter and bolt it to your new catalytic converter. Then replace the bolt from that bracket into your engine. We'll just fast forward as Don tightens those up. Reinstall the heat shield with the two 12mm bolts. Reinstall your O2 sensor, and tighten it up with the O2 socket. Once you have it tight, reconnect the harness. Place the 10mm bolt underneath those hoses and tighten that up. Now, under the car, replace those three 13mm nuts. Again tighten these to 25 or 35 foot pounds, maybe a little more, if you need to. Then, twist your O2 sensor into place and tighten it up with your O2 socket, reconnect the harness and attach it to the bracket and you are all set.

Good fit where it matters

This part was a perfect match for my 98 Honda Civic LX except for one small detail that I am hoping doesnt affect the car in any way. I installed everything as it was on the 1aauto youtube video and didnt have trouble until i was fitting the bolt that is supposed to go on the engine bracket and bolted into the engine, it seemed as though the whole on the part for that area was crooked or mis-sized to fit the original bolt, with a bit of struggle i was able to put both bolt and the nut on but it failed to stay on there twice possibly because of the engine vibrations but i have yet to try the last method which is putting loctite on there to secure the bolt to the bracket without it unscrewing with the vibrations.

This manifold was an excellent buy. Installation was straight forward. The quality and the value were first rate.. The only real difficulty I had was getting the old original manifold out. I shopped around for a long time and most of the other places prices were much more. I'm convinced you won't get a better deal on a new converter anywhere than 1A auto

This same product at local auto parts stores was around $400. Why pay that much when they both have the same warranty! 1AAuto was extremely fast and friendly. Definitely recommend if you have to replace your old combined manifold/catalytic converter. A couple notes from my install experience: the 'old' 13mm bolts on the bottom side of the flange were 14mm; the new ones are 11/16" (not 13mm); I needed a M10x1.25x40mm bolt to replace the original bolt on the bracket attached to the manifold / engine block due to the old flange having been threaded but the new one is not - so the old bolt wasn't long enough to add a nut on the bottom side. And notice which side the manifold gasket is facing when you remove and be sure to mount the new one facing the same way. For me the 'trim' around the port holes was 'concave' side 'out' facing away from the engine. But in general the instructions on their site are great. IF you follow them sequentially you will be in good shape. And you might not do something like install the top O2 sensor BEFORE installing the new heat shield, then have to install it again after the installing the shield. But the new p

The Exhaust Manifold is a great product, fits like a glove. The part were you connect the Exhaust manifold with the catalytic (the screw) was stripped and had to go to the auto-parts store to get a tap and die-set to try to save the screw. The videos did help as to how to properly disassemble and re install the product.

I had my mechanic install this for me and from what he told me the product seems sound. Easy installation and it passed a emissions test. So couldn't be happier with it. For first time buyers of catalytic converters, when you first get it, it will need to burn off some anti-rust prevention off of it. So don't be alarmed when you drive it for the first time that some smoke is coming off of it.

1A had a great idea when they sent me an email about my order being shipped. Included in the email, was a detailed video on how to complete my project of replacing my Honda exhaust manifold. While I was making this manifold change, I also changed out both my upstream and down stream O2 sensor. For my 1990 Honda Civic LX, my bolt size was a little different then what the video called for and I had to modify an OEM bracket that the video asked us to reuse to make it fit the new 1A part. Our Honda now runs like new again. I would defiantly look to ordering again from 1A. Maybe my next project for the Honda will be replacing the shock absorbers.

Just received product today and there was ZERO packing paper or bubbles in the box. This in turn absolutely destroyed the gasket that came with it. Guess Ill be reusing the one I currently have on the car and hope the manifold itself wasn't damaged as well. Ive packed and shipped internationally for years, glass and liquid, wrapped individually and never a complaint. This was just plain lazy by the packer.

The exhaust manifold and catalytic converter come as one assembled unit. The one I got was part number 1AEMK00182. I'm not sure if you can buy them separate. Also, look at the one that is currently on the car to check the style and bolt pattern.
