Hi, I'm Don from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and the next time you need a part for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the power steering pump on this 1998 Honda Civic with the 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine. It's the same part and process on these Civics from 1996 to 2000. The items you'll need include a new power steering pump from 1AAuto.com, 10mm and 12mm sockets, and a ratchet, a 1/2 inch ratchet, a pair of pliers, a drip pan, a rag, and power steering fluid.
At the top of your power steering pump, there are two 10mm bolts. Go ahead and remove those. Before disconnecting that hose, make sure you have a rag ready, and a drip pan underneath. Just put the rag down over that hole just to stop it from flowing out. Use a pair of pliers. pull up that hose clamp, and disconnect this host. Again, make sure the drip pan is underneath there, and use the same rag to clean up that area as well.
Now, you want to loosen this 12mm bolt at the top of your power steering pump. Remove this 12mm bolt down here at the bottom of the power steering pump. Once that bolt's removed, pull your belt off your power steering pulley and remove that 12 mm bolt from the top of the pump. Once that's out, your power steering pump will lift up and out.
On the left is the old part; on the right is the new part from 1AAuto.com. They're identical, and will fit exactly the same. We do have to switch the pulley over, so put a screw driver through the hold in the pulley and lock it into place using a 19mm socket and ratchet to break the bolt or the nut loose.
You can just put your old pulley onto your new power steering pump, or you can buy a new pulley from 1AAuto.com and put that onto the power steering pump. We're just going to go ahead and do that. You want to replace that nut and tighten it up.
Lower your power steering pump back into place and replace the 12 mm bolt. You want to tighten it up, but not too much that the pump actually stops moving because you still want it to be able to swing back and forth. Do the exact same thing with the lower bolt.
Now, push your power steering pump forward and put your belt onto the pulley. Insert a 1/2 inch ratchet into the square and push it back to put tension on the belt. Then tighten up those two 12mm bolts. The correct amount of tension on the belt is basically enough so that when you grab the belt and move it up and down, you can only move it about an eighth to a fourth of an inch up and down.
Next, reconnect that hose, and with your pliers slide the clamp back down into place. Then reconnect that other hose and replace those two 10mm bolts. We'll just fast-forward here as Don tightens those up.
Now, replace the power steering fluid. Just fill it to the fill line inside and use Honda Synthetic Power Steering Fluid. Now with the cap off, start your vehicle, and then turn the wheels back and forth. Then, once you've done this a couple times, you need to check the power steering fluid and make sure it's still in the right spot. It's advisable just to check the power steering fluid a couple of times the first few times you drive the car.

The pump arrived 2 days sooner than promised by 1A.Cool! Packaging was perfect. I watched the 1A installation video before replacing the old one - very helpful!. The old pump was out and the new one installed in less than an hour. The only minor problem was getting the old pulley off, but with some WD40, a little heat from my torch and some elbow grease, the nut loosened and the pulley popped off. It's been on the car for 3 weeks now and everything is working just fine. Nice job 1A Auto.

Delivery was spot on (UPS). Parts were correct (was a little worried about that since purchasing online).
Had a super difficult time removing the flatnut that connects the pulley to the pump. Would have been nice to have that nut available to purchase or one of the parts that I ordered be available.
Overall, good experience! ??
Running Smooth

I purchased this pump from 1A Auto because the picture looked just like the one on my Civic. Other suppliers had lower cost pumps that were "guaranteed to fit" but did not look the same. Yes I could have bolted one of those other brands onto the engine block, however with only a one bolt high pressure hydraulic coupling it would have never worked. So be careful of Chinese semantics of Fit verses Functional. The pump from 1A Auto was an exact replacement and took about 20 miles of driving to wear in. Now it emits no sounds louder than background engine noise in normal steering. I also purged and replaced all of my old steering fluid making the steering buttery smooth. Better even than when I purchased the car. I am very happy with my purchase and choice of 1A Auto as a parts supplier.

Upon install, this new power steering pump did not pump. It made a loud screeching noise and did not provide any assist. 1A Auto was very professional and gracious. With just one phone conversation, they gave me a full refund and were most helpful. We will use 1A Auto again.
Good like OEM Pump

I noticed it was leaking very little from the o ring plug located at the bottom of the pump. My job involves changing all kind of seals and plugs so when I took off the plug I could tell the o ring was just a little too thin to properly seal. It was 1.5 mm thick and a 2 mm thick o ring did the job. Other then that minor issue it has been doing great and would recommend the steering pump!
Like the factory pump, but harder to steer

I was torn between giving this power steering pump 3 or 4 stars. First the good points, it is an exact fit replacement for my 2000 Honda Civic LX and looks so much like it it could have come out of the same factory. It works and doesn't make any unusual noises, but appears to have less pressure than the original pump since after installation and bleeding the system the power steering is now about 10 to 15 percent harder to steer than with the original pump. When I initially received the pump the inner product box was torn open, though the pump itself looked new, so it may have been a return, and I can't say with certainty that other pumps would exhibit the reduced pressure.

The return hose fitting constantly leaked ps fluid. Ended up removing return hose fitting from original honda pump and that's when I noticed the inferior fitting quality compared to Honda pump fitting. Installed an oem Honda o ring. Hopefully no more leaks. Wil update you in future.
