Brought to you by 1AAuto.com, your source for quality replacement parts and the best service on the internet. In this video we're going to show you how to replace the outside door handle on this '94 Toyota Corolla, same as a '94 to '97. Pretty easy process. Tools you'll need are a flat blade screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, probably a door panel clip tool and then a 10 millimeter socket with ratchet and extension, or a ten millimeter wrench.
You're going to want to start by removing your inside door handle. There's a Phillips screw right in the middle. You can see I'm using a Phillips screwdriver to remove that. Then the handle slides forward and this one's in there a little bit tight so it takes a second. I pull, it slides forward and then comes out. Then in behind there's a rod with a clip. You use your finger, undo the clip, and then use your finger again. Pull the rod up and out of the door handle and off. Next, there's a little trim panel right at the top of the door near the mirror. Just pull it off with your hand. Then you want to pry up on your door, on this armrest pad. Then remove these two screws.
We'll speed up here as we use a Phillips screwdriver to remove those screws. Get under the front there, pry it up gently. Pull this up and out. Little button right under here. Press that. Release your switch panel. Now, if necessary use the door panel clip tool. Put it under, find the clips. The one actually comes off pretty easy. Now lift your panel up and off. At this point on your vehicle you'll probably find that you have a plastic water shield covering that hole right there. You'll want to carefully pull that off and you do want to reinstall it. This vehicle was missing it. I'm going to undo four ten millimeter bolts and a nut and get this brace out of the way. We'll use a little bit of fast motion to get through that. With that out of the way you can see up in here, there's the back of the door handle. On top of that rod is a yellow clip. Reach in with a finger flip that clip off, pull the rod out and then further in is another yellow clip. It's best to reach in ... with your thumb and pull that rod off. Basically you just reach in there with your thumb and pull it off. Now there's two ten millimeters bolts. One there and one right through there.
We'll speed it up slightly here as we remove those two bolts. Once you get that rear bolt out you can actually reach up and grab your lock and twist it counter clockwise and pull it out. Now your handle comes right out. Just to show you, your lock is in there like that. You just need to reach up there and twist it counter clockwise and pull it out. Here's a new handle from 1A Auto. This is a smooth handle. We do offer these both smooth and textured. This vehicle, as you can see, has black door handles. It should have the textured finished handles. I wanted to show you this smooth one. You can paint this to match your vehicle if you desire. What I suggest for that, go to a automotive parts store that has a good paint department. They can mix up some paint to match your vehicle, put it into an air charge can and then you can paint the handle yourself. You probably will want to this gasket before you paint. For this vehicle the original texture handle's still working well so we'll reinstall that.
Just put the handle back in place. I am first going to put this front bolt in. Thread the bolt in 'til it's snug and then back it out three or four turns. The lock does have to kind of go between the metal of the door and the door handle. That's in there now. Put my bolt through. Just a quick visual confirmation. That bolt is through the lock cylinder and then through the door and into the door handle. That bolt is in just fine. We'll tighten these up. Tighten them up nice and firm. Just use a flashlight. You can kind of look up in there, see that lock rod going off. Hook it into its hole. Then push the clip on. OK, and then this one is easy to see. We'll hit the fast forward button again here as we put that brace back in place. Start the four ten millimeter bolts and the nuts. Then tighten them up. There really should be a plastic water shield on here but this vehicle's missing it. We're going to put our door panel up into place. Make sure our power window and door lock harness comes up through. Make sure the door lock is through. Hang it up there. Then basically you just go in behind, find the pins, line them up. We'll fast forward as we put those two screws back in place.
