Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to be working with our 1998 Toyota Camry. We're going to show you how to remove and replace your knock sensor on the back side of the engine.
This part senses pre-ignition or spark knock inside of the motor, which means there's an issue with compression, ignition timing, fuel mixture, something that's causing the air fuel inside of your cylinder to go off before it was supposed to. This is detrimental to the engine and all of it's internal components and can cause catastrophic engine failure. Your knock sensor picks up on this little vibration or noise that you normally wouldn't hear inside of the car and de-tunes the engine accordingly to make sure that it runs within safe parameters.
If you like this video, please click subscribe. We have a ton more info on this car, as well as many other makes and models. If you want this part for your vehicle, it's available from 1AAuto.com. You can follow the link down in the description.
The only item we'll need for this repair is a 27 millimeter socket and ratchet. We're doing this on a lift, but this can easily be done at home with a jack and jack stand.
If you raise and support the front of the vehicle, you can find the sensor below the intake manifold on the back side of the engine. You can reach up between the CV axle and the exhaust. Push down on the tab. Remove the electrical connector. Use a 27 millimeter socket and ratchet.
Here we have our old knock sensor that we removed from the vehicle; and our new knock sensor from 1AAuto.com. As you can see, we have the same single wire connector at the top. We have the same threads on the sensor end here. We have the same 27 millimeter hex for our wrench. So, if your knock sensor has gone bad and is causing the check engine light on your vehicle, this new part from 1A Auto is going to go in, direct fit, just like your original equipment, and fix you up right.
Install your new knock sensor into the threads on the back the motor. Bring it down as tight as you can by hand. Then we'll finishing snugging it up with a 27 millimeter socket and ratchet. Reconnect the electrical connector, and you're good to go.
Thanks for tuning in. We hope this video helped you out. Next time you need parts for your car, please visit 1AAuto.com. Also check out our other helpful how-to and diagnosis videos.

no problem connecting to the two knock sensors but the connection to the cars harness was poor. Would not snap together and I had to improvise with electrical tape to make the connection. Can't say I was satisfied but I was able to solve the CEL issue.

By far the least expensive way to go because it comes with both sensors and the harness as well which is what makes it such any affordable option. Most places wanted 70 to 90 for a single sensor.

Good Price on the product and it fit the application. Having both sensors and the harness was good due to the location of the sensors.
Perfect fit.

Always good service from A1. The product worked perfectly and solved my warning light problem. These are buried deep in the engine so having a quality product is really satisfying. I wouldn't shop anywhere else.
Harness Wouldn't Clip In

The knock sensors fit perfectly but the Sensor Harness wouldn't clip into the factory harness after removing the original harness. Had to come up with my own solution to get the male/ female ends of the harness to stay together.

The knock sensors worked like they should but the harness wouldn't stay plugged in. The tab that connects to the detent on the connector wouldn't hold. Just kept coming unplugged. Had to get another one off a salvage car engine to make it work.
Does not Fit Camry V6

The part was supposed to be OEM equivalent, but it did not fit. The sensors fit properly, and the connectors mated with each knock sensor correctly.
However, the other connector (4 pins) did not mate properly. It seated correctly but it would not snap into place. I tried all kinds of things, but couldn't get it to click in - though it seemed REALLY close.
I ended up cutting off the connectors for the old and new harnesses, and then soldered the old connector (known to fit) onto the new harness. It worked fine, but took me an extra hour of effort.
I called 1A Auto to see if they would do something for me for the bad part they sold me, but they would not. They said I should have called and then ordered a replacement. Unfortunately, I had the top part of the engine torn apart and did not have time for replacement parts via mail. Regardless, they said the part would fit and it did not.
I try never to say never, but am having a hard time imagining buying anything else from 1A Aut

Lexus picky about knock sensors

giving this a 3 star review because I am having to replace the knock sensors again with OEM parts, like others Ive seen review this product. Shipping was fast. The O2 sensors, and knock sensor harness both worked. I purchased the knock sensor kit that included both knock sensors, and the harness, although only knock sensor 1 was showing bad. It was cheaper to get the kit than to order one OEM sensor. But it is now costing me an additional $600 to have the knock sensors replaced with OEM parts because the engine does not like aftermarket knock sensors. I have a 2000 Lexus RX 300 with 228K miles. Invest in OEM knock sensors to save yourself a lot of time, and money!!!
Saved me about $650 for these parts!

I got an estimate from my repair shop that it would be about $1100 to fix my knock sensors to get my check engine light to go off. It's an old car and not really worth that much, so I decided to double-check with a friend. He said the expensive part would be the knock sensors-harness kit and it was very labor-intensive, but he would do it for a very reasonable price. I looked online and found the Toyota knock sensor-harness kit for about 1/3 of what he told me it would probably cost. It saved me a big chunk of money for him to do the work and it runs better than it ever has! Thanks!

I saw so many prices for this online ranging from $20 to $500. I was a little skeptical seeing the cost for both sensors and harness at $130. Very reasonable priced but also not too cheap to be concerning so I took a chance. For all the work that it takes to get to these suckers you dont want to have to do it again. But you also dont want to pay $500 for dealer parts. Worked great the first time and the check engine light disapeared. Thanks guys! I appreciate a vendor I can trust. You have earned business.

This kit looked promising. Why not replace both sensors and harness while doing this big job? After 6 hours of work removing plenum, various grounds and vacuum tube, intake manifold, etc to get them installed, turns out one of the new sensors was defective. I realize I may just have been unlucky getting a bad part and 1A Auto has offered to replace the parts, but I expect better quality control on such a difficult to replace part.
Perfect fit and works

I bought this product for a 2003 Toyota Highlander. After researching that OEM part will cost nearly $400+ I decided to research for an alternative. Found this product and was amazed by the price and the reviews. It is very hard to replace this part in this model as you will need to remove half of the top of your engine. I installed the part and the check engine light is no longer showing. It has been 3 weeks now and the car is running much smoother and no check engine has appeared again. I will definitely continue buying from 1A Auto.

One of the knock sensor failed immediately after all that work. I have to start all over again.also cable that plugs in to my cars harness isnt a good fit. Had to push very hard to get it to click.
Just get NTK or OEM, not a job to gable with cheap replacement parts that are dead on arrival.

Purchased this kit last year, got cold feet on doing the work after seeing how involved it is on my 02 Highlander.
Decided to give it a go, before installing the knock sensors (luckily), I tested with my multimeter. 1 of them were completely dead, no reading. The other was only reading a resistance of 4.35 while both factory knock sensors were matched at 7.55.
Now I do not trust to use the wire harness. Found NTK knock sensors which make parts for Toyota and are possibly OEM, paid $106 each, and found a factory harness for $39.99.
Since I waited to install I am sure I cannot return this faulty kit!
Do not skimp out here, lots of hours to get these replaced and you do not want to do it again.

Would stick with Lexus/Toyota factory OEM. I know they more expensive but itll safe you time and money. Lexus is more sensitive so sometimes after market sensor doesnt work. Got some for my Lexus and didnt work so had to swapped it out and put factory OEM. Was gonna cost me another hundreds more but my mechanic was too nice and hooked it up. Good luck!
