Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. We've been selling auto parts for over 30 years. We're dedicated to delivering quality auto parts, expert customer service, fast and free shipping, all backed by our 100% satisfaction guarantee. Visit us at 1AAuto.com, your trusted source for quality auto parts.
In this video, we're going to be working with our 1998 Ford F150. We're going to show you how to remove and replace your vehicle's ignition cylinder. These tend to get worn out and your key will fall out of them. This cylinder comes pre-keyed with a new set of keys in it; it does not need to be taken apart and re-keyed for your vehicle. If you like this video, please click subscribe, we have a ton more information on this, and many other vehicles, and if you need this part for your truck, you can follow the link down on the description over to 1AAuto.com. Here are the items you'll need for this repair.
Place a pick, or another small straight tool into this hole under the column, it's the one directly underneath the ignition cylinder. Now the reason we're replacing ours – and this is pretty common on these trucks – is once I put my key in and put it forward, I can pull my key right out and start the truck. So obviously, it’s not very safe, and not very secure.
So all you need to do to replace this, is take your original key, rotate it to the run position, which is going to be the last position you can click forward before actually cranking the car. Place that straight tool up at this angle, and you'll feel a little detent ball, and you push that down. You can pull the cylinder straight out, and this is that little detent ball you're going for. You just need to push that in until it releases.
Once your old ignition cylinder is out, we'll take our new ignition cylinder from 1A Auto, which you can see is exactly the same. It already comes with a new set of keys, and you could re-key this if you wanted to, but this one already comes assembled, so there's no need to do any of that. Just keep your original key to do the doors. We'll click this to the run position as well. So, go all the way counter clockwise, and then click it clockwise until the detent ball will compress. Reinstall it, turn it back, now it's in there, our key goes forward and doesn't come out of the ignition, and starts our truck just fine.
Thanks for watching. Visit us at 1AAuto.com for quality auto parts, fast and free shipping, and the best customer service in the industry.

Disconnect the negative cable on the battery.
Insert the key into the ignition and rotate it to the run position.

In this video, we show you how to replace the ignition lock cylinder on this Ford Ranger. The only tool you'll need is some type of a slender tool. I use a lineup tool or a Phillips screwdriver can work for you.
Use an adjustable wrench, loosen this nut on the battery cable and then turn the battery cable and disconnect your negative cable. In our Ranger, our problem is that our lock cylinder is really not offering us a whole lot of protection here. You can see that you can rotate it back and rotate it forward without a key in there. Sometimes what will happen also, is it will stick and as soon as you start feeling that stickiness you want to replace your lock cylinder, because eventually if that keeps going your lock cylinder could get stuck in place.
To get your lock cylinder out, rotate it to the run position, take a punch tool or you could use a Phillips screwdriver. A Phillips screwdriver is a little tougher, because it does not have this kind of flat end here. You put that right up and in and you're going through this smaller hole here and you can feel a little pin, you push it up and the lock cylinder comes right out.
Here's our original lock cylinder for this 96' Ranger. We do offer two different lock cylinders. Here's the new one, this is the early style, which is the same as what's in our truck so that's what we know that we want. There's also the later style, so it's pretty easy to tell the difference. There's a difference in this thumb area.
Now take your new lock cylinder, and you want to rotate it so you can push that pin in. That pin goes towards the bottom. Put your lock cylinder in and it locks in place. Now you can see the truck is secure again, it actually requires a key to start it up. You'll want to put your new keys obviously on your keychain. Now reconnect your negative battery cable and tighten it up and you should be all set.
We hope this video helps you out. Brought to you by www.1AAuto.com, your source for quality replacement parts and the best service on the Internet. Please feel free to call us toll-free, 888-844-3393. We're the company that's here for you on the Internet and in person.

Wow!!!! the dealers what a rip off! I brought my truck in twice for the same problem and twice they charged me $498 and kept my truck the first time for 4 days and the second time for just over two days it took less than 30 seconds to remove the old busted ignition switch and install the new one. you could only imagine what was going through my head at that exact moment. Watch the videos 1A Auto has the best help videos out there, they're sincere and honest straight to the point no BS and show you how to do it right man I'm glad I found these guys what a huge Cash Saver I can't say enough about them

This switch was an easy fix for my "98" Ford F150. At first I naturally thought battery; starter; relay; etc...(but this 10 min replacement job cranked my buggy). Good Price and quick delivery...(Thank You, I'll be back!) PS: A good mechanic could most likely complete the job in 2-3 minutes...[ha-ha-ha].

November 11, 2019
We lost the key to our 1998 Ford F-150 so we were wondering how we were going to get it started. We looked up the part on 1aauto, ordered it and it was delivered within a couple of days. We watched the tutorial to see how to remove it and install the new one. Quite the job but thanks to the tutorial we managed to get the old one out and the new one installed. It worked perfect! Thank you for having the part we needed and shipping it to us so quickly!

Easy to remove worn out ignition and replace with a new ignition. However, I wanted to use my existing keys so I took the wafers from the existing ignition and installed them in the new ignition. The new ignition works great and is an exact replacement for original one. Most important, my original keys work because this ignition can be relayed. This ignition is a great buy at this price.

Yes but; if you replace the tumblers in the new cylinder with one's from your old one, you use your original key.

Some models offered it while others did not. We do not have that information, but if you contact a dealership with the VIN they may confirm whether or not your vehicle has the transponder key.

We cannot tell you if your key is chipped or not. Regular keys look the same as electronic keys, so you cannot determine if they have a chip based on your key's physical appearance. If you do not know and are unable to locate this information in your manual, please contact your local dealer and they can assist you.

This will be just fine if you don't have the original key. This comes with 2, and just keep in mind this will not work on models that have a chipped key from factory!

If you are unsure if your key is chipped, you could take it to a local dealer and they could tell you. Regular keys look the same as electronic keys, so you cannot determine if they have a chip based on your key's physical appearance.

What is the difference between this key ignition switch & the $41.95 switch ? My truck is the base line work truck with no transponder chip. I'm pretty sure that this key switch will work, just want to make sure.February 5, 2019

This part is listed to fit a variety of different vehicles so we are uncertain which item you are referring to for $41.95. Both listings should show the brand difference, if one, as well as what is included and the specs. Thank you!
