Hi, I'm Don from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and the next time you need a part for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace a rear shock on this 2006 Jeep Liberty. We show you on the passenger side, but the driver's side is a similar procedure. We do recommend that you do both shocks. The items you'll need for this include new rear shocks from 1AAuto.com, 15mm, 18mm, and 19mm socket and ratchet, 15mm wrench, a torque wrench, and jack and jack stands.
If you have a wheel cover, you want to start off by removing it. If you don't have air powered tools, you want to loosen up these 19mm lug nuts while the vehicles on the ground, jack the vehicle up, and then remove them the rest of the way.
The shock is held in with a 15mm bolt up top and a 15mm bolt below with an 18mm nut on the back. Using a 15mm wrench and an 18mm socket and ratchet, Don just removes the nut from the lower bolt. Use a jack to push up on the wheel knuckle, and this will push in that shock and make it easier to pull that bolt out. Now remove that 15mm bolt up top.
On the back is the old shock. Up front is the new one from 1A Auto. You can see they're identical, and will mount exactly the same.
Feed your new shock up into place and replace that 15mm bolt. We'll fast-forward as Don tightens that up. You don't want it to be too tight. You want to still be able to swing the shock back and forth. Then line up the lower hole on the shock, replace that 15mm bolt and the 18mm nut in the back, and then tighten up that and the upper bolt. Now torque both of those bolts to 75 foot-pounds.
If you used an additional jack on the wheel, you can lower it. We'll fast forward as Don's replacing the wheel and those lug nuts. Then you want to tighten them up preliminarily, lower the vehicle, and tighten them up the rest of the way. Then torque each of them in a crossing pattern to 100 foot-pounds. If you have a wheel cover, replace it.
