Hi, I'm Don from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and the next time you need a part for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the power steering belt on this 1998 Honda Civic with the 1.6L 4-cylinder engine. It's the same part and process on these Civics from 1996 to 2000. The items you'll need include a new power steering belt from 1AAuto.com, a 12mm socket and ratchet, and an additional 1/2 inch ratchet.
Your power steering belt is the belt right here. Start off by just loosening the 12mm bolt right here. Now, on the other side, you'll see there's a 12mm bolt down here. Again, just loosen that up. Once both bolts are loosened, you want to push down on your power steering pump. That'll release the tension on the power steering belt. Then you just want to pull that off the pulley. Then just move the belt around until you can get it off that lower pulley and pull it up and out.
Here's our old belt. You can see it's in rough shape. It's cracking and it's not good. This is what it's supposed to look like. This is a new power steering belt from 1A Auto.
Lower the new power steering belt down into place. Hook it onto that lower pulley. Use a flat blade screwdriver if you need to, or something to help push it on there. Then you want to make sure your power steering pump is still pushed down, and then feed the belt onto the pulley. You'll notice right now there's way too much slack on our belt. Use a 1/2 inch ratchet. There's a square hole on the power steering pump. Put the ratchet in there. Pull up on it and then tighten up the nuts. The correct amount of tension, basically what you want to do is tighten it up and then grab hold of the belt. You should be able to move the belt up and down about 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch. Once you have the tension right then, tighten up the other bolt as well.
