1. Removing the Power Steering Reservoir
Remove the hose clamp on the return hose with pliers or a flat blade screwdriver
Remove the return hose, place it behind the upper engine support to prevent leakage
Pry up on the tab that holds the power steering reservoir to the coolant bottle
Use vise grip pliers to plug off the bottom hose of the reservoir
Bend back on the clamp holding the hose to the steering pump
Remove the hose clamp that holds the hose to the power steering pump
Pull the power steering reservoir and hose up and out
2. Installing the Power Steering Reservoir
Slide the new 1" hose clamp over the hose
Place the hose on the power steering reservoir
Slide the steering reservoir bottle into place
Slide the clip on the reservoir bottle into place
Install a new 1" hose clamp to the power steering side
Place the hose on the power steering pump
Tighten the clamp with a flat blade screwdriver
Place a new 3/4" hose clamp on the return line
Slide the return hose onto the reservoir
Tighten the return hose clamp
3. Servicing the Steering Reservoir
Refill the reservoir with the appropriate power synthetic steering fluid

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the power steering reservoir and hose on a 2002 Volvo V70. The operation is very similar in 2001 through 2007 of the V70, as well as the S60, S80 and cross-country wagons. You'll need two one inch hose clamps, a 3/4 inch hose clamp, a long flat screwdriver, as well as some synthetic power steering fluid, and a pair of pliers to pinch the hose so that the fluid doesn't come out while we're doing the repair.
Remove the hose clamp on the return hose to the top of the power steering reservoir. If it is a Nitex type, cut it off. If it is a screw type, unscrew it. Remove that return hose on the power steering reservoir. There could be a little fluid that comes out so just be ready. Put your thumb over it if you have to, and then put it up behind the upper engine support so it doesn't leak.
Using a long flat-head screwdriver, pry up on the tab that holds the power steering reservoir to the coolant bottle. Use a pair of hose clamp pliers or long needle-nose vice grips to plug off the bottom hose of the power steering reservoir. Bend back on the clamp that holds the hose in place, and pull that up and out of the way. Then, using a screwdriver, remove the hose clamp that holds the hose to the power steering pump. Fast-forward as I do that.
Once the hose clamps are off, pull out the power steering reservoir and hose. Get your new hose clamp, slide it over the hose, put your hose onto the power steering reservoir, and go ahead and tighten up that hose clamp. You can see here the correct way to install that hose. It goes up into the bottom of the power steering reservoir, up and then down, around, and that's where it's going to go into the power steering pump. Line up the two guides on the power steering reservoir to those of the coolant bottle, and then slide it into place and clip the top clip into place. Install a new hose clamp to the power steering pump side of the hose. Put it on the power steering pump and tighten it up.
Use a new hose clamp on the return line that goes into the top of the power steering reservoir, and slide that on to the reservoir and tighten that clamp back up. Refill your reservoir with the appropriate Volvo synthetic power steering fluid. Make sure that it's clean and free of debris. This may not look clean, but that's the actual color. It's a dark purple of the factory power steering fluid.

1. Replacing the Power Steering Reservoir
Slide the power steering reservoir upward to release it from the mounting slots on the coolant reservoir
Disconnect the upper return hose from the reservoir
Set the hose aside facing up to prevent spilling too much fluid
Plug the upper inlet on the reservoir
Disconnect the lower hose from the reservoir
Plug the hose while turning the reservoir upside down to prevent spilling fluid
Connect the lower hose to the lower inlet of the replacement reservoir
Connect the return hose to the reservoir
Seat the reservoir in the mounting slots on the coolant reservoir
Transfer remaining fluid from the old reservoir to the new reservoir
Transfer the reservoir cap
Run the engine briefly to cycle the fluid, then turn it off
Top off the power steering reservoir with fluid specified by the manufacturer

Hey everyone, Sue here from 1A Auto and today on our 03 Volvo V70, I'm going to show you how to replace a power steering pump reservoir. We got this one from 1A Auto. If you need it, this part or any other part for your car, click on the link below and head on over to 1aauto.com.
I'm going to grab the old reservoir and I'm going to pull it upward. It attaches to the coolant tank reservoir. Just slides into the slotted area right there. So you can see two hoses here. We have the actual flow into the pump and then we have the return hose. So I'm going to disconnect the return hose first. Yours might be a factory clamp, which is a ... It's a one time use, so you might have to break it off with a pair of cutters or pliers. So I replaced this one once already. I'm going to take this clamp off with a flathead screwdriver. Move it on down, pry that off. There you go. So you don't want all the fluid going everywhere, I have a catch pan underneath so when I do have some over drips. I'm going to slide this back here and keep it above the level.
So my new tank has these nifty little covers, caps that come along. I'm not going to use them on the new one, but I can snap them on the the old one so I don't lose fluid everywhere. So I'm going to get the bottom one off and ready to go. So I'm going to take this clamp off. This is a 7mm socket. I don't know if you have that style at home or whatever clamp you have, just remove it and if it's something you can't reuse, make sure you have one ready to go and it's the proper size.
Now I'm going to just twist this right off and see how quick that was. Rest that right there. Put this on there, reattach my new reservoir. Make sure it's tight. Attach the return hose.
Okay, I'm going to take this slotted guide. There's three of them. You can see there's two on the bottom, and then one of the top. So push in on the bottom part of it while you slide it down and it locks right in like that.
Now to transfer the fluid over, I'm going to take the bottom one off, bring it on, let it pour in. We're going to reuse this cap. Well, because I did spill some, I'm gonna obviously pick up my mess here, but then I'm going to start it and run it and make sure I top this reservoir off of the new one with the manufacturers specifications for power steering fluid.
