Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video we're going to show you how to replace the inside door handle on this 2000 Ford Mustang. We work on the passenger's side, the driver's side is basically the same procedure. Tools you'll need are a flat blade screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, a hammer, a punch, a drill with a 1/4 inch or larger drill bit and an M6 by 15 bolt with a nut and lock washer.
It's recommended that you use an 8 millimeter wrench to disconnect the negative battery cable on your vehicle. First there is actually a pin on the front side, right there. I use a flat blade screwdriver to carefully pry the clip and then once you get to a certain point you can pull it out with your fingers. Right on top of this panel is a little notch, you insert a screwdriver and lightly pry out. Once you have this out, take your screwdriver down here and pry up and bring this right out. Then use a Phillips screwdriver to disconnect the switch from this panel. On this vehicle there are two Phillips screws right here and if I remember from my past experience, there's either kind of a pin like there was down here, or a bolt. I'm going to remove these two Phillips screws. Just keep in mind there may be another fastener here as well.
Around your door handle, just insert a screwdriver. You want to pry the bottom first, not the top. Pull the bottom out and then off. Up here use your fingers or use a screwdriver to pry that panel right off. Now your whole panel lifts up and off. To remove the door handle, what you want to do is take a punch, and ideally you want to punch the center right out of this rivet. OK that's what the rivet should look like now.
You want a 1/4 inch or larger drill bit. I've got a 9/32"?, and you want to drill very slowly and lightly. I'm going to speed it up here while I drill, the aluminum is very soft so you just want to, kind of press lightly and run your drill fast and slowly drill into it. You see the rivet coming right off onto my bit.
Now, pry the handle out. Pull it forward and it comes off. Then the cable comes off and this little plastic insert comes out. The cable will push out. Kind of twist it over and up through, there's your handle off. Now I'm just going to deal with the rest of the rivet here. It's pretty nicely beveled so I'm just going to wear it down some. So, I used my drill to file it down, then just use a hammer and screwdriver, the punch and push the rest of the rivet through. A new door handle from 1A Auto is the exact same, has the pad and everything. You are going to have to remove your shield here. The cable goes in, down and then turn it and lock it in. Then this little lock, slides in. Put it on the door. The handle you may have to push just a little bit to get it to lock into place.
I'm going to use a small bolt, 10 millimeter head, about a centimeter and a 1/2 long, a nut and a lock washer. I'll feed the bolt in from this side first. Then, I can just re-thread through here. Hold it in place, start my washer and start my nut on. Put a 10 millimeter socket on our ratchet, nice and firm. Now I can put my water shield back in place, hang it up over the lock.
To put the door panel back on, what you want to do is, line up your lower tabs with the slots in the door. Then kind of lift it up, and put your door lock in place. You might need to lift the back of the panel up just a little bit. Make sure your harness comes up through and lift up and push the panel on. Start pushing it down in. As you push it down in, you may see it do this. You just want to use a screwdriver and make sure that goes down into the channel. You want to make sure it's down, and make sure the panel is right against the door all the way around. We can put this corner, and snap that back on, and the tab that goes into the front here to hold it. Put our two screws into the panel here. If you had something holding it there, re-install that. Take our switch, put it in, turn it over, and start one screw. Take this and put it down in back here first and push it down, work it in to place. Then your bezel to door cable and push this right on.
