Hi, I'm Don from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video we're going to show you how to replace the wiper motor transmission. This gets taken out a lot when you have heavy ice. You start the windshield wipers up and one of them is stuck and it ends up stripping. Then you only have one windshield wiper working. Maybe you don't have any windshield wipers working, but you can hear the motor running. It's a fairly straightforward repair. You'll need a few tools: 10 and 14mm sockets with a ratchet. You'll need a small flat blade screwdriver and a couple of large flat blade screwdrivers as well.
I'm going to remove the two wiper arms and we do so by locating and removing the two 14mm nuts that hold them in place, one being here and the other underneath this cover. I'm using a flat blade screwdriver to remove the cover and expose the nut. I'm going to apply a little pressure and just wiggle this off of the wiper motor transmission. I'm noting that this one on the driver's side says DR. I'm taking off the weather stripping by gently pulling up where the clips are, the little plastic clips that are integrated into the weather stripping. Just speed up as we work the rest of those clips out then just kind of pull that weather strip off to the side. There are three clips, one on each end and one in the middle. In this case, these are missing. Once those are removed, your panels come free.
Locate your three bolts that hold the wiper transmission into place. Fast forward here as we remove those bolts. Those are 10mm bolts. Locate your connector, press the tab, pull it off. Pull your transmission and wiper motor out.
We use two flat blade screwdrivers to pry the linkage off of the motor. Locate your three 10mm bolts that hold the transmission to the motor and remove those.
Then we go ahead and put the motor back in. Fasten my three bolts. Notice we start the bolts first and then tighten them up afterwards. Also notice that it's not a new transmission. The new parts from 1AAuto are going to be the exact same as the old parts. In this case, this car didn't need a new transmission so we aren't going to just waste a brand new part to put it on a car that didn't need it. Re-secure the inside arm, then the outside. Put your connector back on the bracket.
I'm putting the wiper assembly back in and re-securing it with the bolts. Again, we'll hit the high speed button. We start all three bolts in first, make sure they're going in correctly, and then tighten them up. When you tighten them up you want to tighten them up nice and firm. Don't make them too tight though. Reconnect your harness.
Put the cowl back on. If you have the three clips, they go back in now: one, two, and three. Put the weather stripping back on. Okay, I'll fast forward as you go along and match each clip up with the hole and press them down in. Make sure they snap in. I'm going to cycle the wipers once, make sure that they're in the rest position when I go to put the wiper blade back on. I'm reattaching the driver's side wiper arm. I'm pressing it down, then what I'm going to do is, I'm going to line it up about two inches from the cowl. Now I'm just going to run it to make sure I've got the full coverage.
