In this video, we're going to show you outside door handle replacement on this 2001 PT Cruiser, same as any 01-05. The only tools you'll need are a flat blade and Phillips blades screwdrivers, a 10 mm socket with a ratchet and extension, and a T15 Torx screwdriver.
You're going to start by pulling off this panel, then removing two 10 mm bolts underneath here. You can see one there and there's one up in there as well. Then there are four screws, Phillip screws; one there, there, down here, and back here. We'll pick up the work pace here as we pry off that panel. Then we use a 10 mm socket with a ratchet and extension to remove the two bolts in the armrest, and then we use a screwdriver to remove the four Phillips screws; one behind the handle and then around the perimeter of the door.
Now, once you have those screws out, then you start up here. Just grab on and give it a quick. Actually, grab on, pull it out. Work your fingers under, work them down, give it a quick tug. Work your fingers down further, tug, down further. Now you've got everything loose. You want to pull your door panel up and off like that. Make sure the piece of weather strip goes back on to the car here. There's a clip, I'm not sure if you can see it, but you can just push it down with your thumb. Then this rod pulls out. And then you have a harness connection for your door locks. It's a little tab. Just poke it through with your thumb and pull it off, and your door panel is off. Remove this plug over here. Pull your shield down some. There are two 10 mm bolts; one right in there and then one right there.
We'll fast forward here, as we use a 10 mm socket with a ratchet and extension to remove those two 10 mm nuts. If you do drop one down in the door don't worry about it, you can just reach down in and grab it. After you got it loose, pull the handle out, and that should come out in your ratchet. Now you're going to see that the handle is loose. There is a little Torx screw. It's actually a T15 Torx screw. What you want to do is reach through here, okay, get that screw and unscrew it. Carefully bring it out with the Torx bit, and now you pull your handle free of this latch and it comes right out. There's your handle out.
Reinstallation, just reverse. There's a little tab in the latch here that goes up into the handle and the handle goes on like that. Put it back into place. You have a little T15 screw. We'll take the screw and start it from this side, put it in, and push it through. Take the 10 mm nut, put it right in, tighten them up firm. Put your water shield back in place. Put the plug back in here.
To reinstall your door panel, first you want to reconnect your power door lock switch and then put your door lock or your door handle rod back in place. Push the panel as close to the door and put it back on. Now lift it up into place, put your door lock button through, push your door lock button through, then push your door panel in. Get it into that lip right there and it pretty much goes down into place. Just use the back of your hand. Now we're going to hit fast forward as we put on the four screws; one behind the door handle, around the perimeter, and then the last one down at the back of the door. Then we'll use our 10 mm socket with ratchet and extension. Put the bolts back in under the door handle or arm rest, and you should be all set.
