In this video, we're going to be working with our 2006 Chrysler 300. We're going to show you how to remove and replace your vehicle's trunk latch, which has an electric mechanism in it that opens it. If this mechanism fails, we'll show you how to crawl through the trunk and open it up manual from the inside.

Here are the items you'll need for this repair: trim tools, small flat blade screwdriver, 10mm socket, ratchet

If your trunk latch, or the electronics have failed, and you can't open it from the trunk release button, open the back door, pull this cord, and lower the back seat. You may have to move the seat back, on the front seat forward, to allow it to collapse completely. You'll notice that there's a safety release latch all the way at the back coming out of the cover for your rear latch. You'll simply pull that, and open your trunk.

Remove these four plastic fasteners securing this cover panel for your trunk latch. This is an awesome application for your 1A Auto trim tools. We can use these forked ends to slide behind those little tabs, pop them out, and then slide behind the base of the pin, and remove it. Once the last pin is out, pull out on the emergency release cable to allow it past the cover, and remove the cover from your latch.

Using a flat blade screwdriver, pry up the tabs for the connector, and remove it. Then we'll use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the two bolts securing the latch to our trunk lid. Be sure to remove the ground strap from your bolt. Then remove the latch assembly from your trunk.

Here we have our old part that we removed from our vehicle, and our new part from 1AAuto.com. As you can see, these parts are exactly the same, with the same latch, same security wire here, same three pin connector, same two bolt mounting location. We have the same safety release cable, if someone were to get trapped in your trunk, or if your trunk were to not open from the electronic mechanism, which is actually this little roller here. These trunk latches can fail with the electronic mechanism no longer rotating and opening your trunk from the switch, which can be a real inconvenience, considering there's no manual latch on the outside of the vehicle. If yours has failed, this new part from 1A Auto is going to go in direct fit, just like your original equipment and fix you up right.

Now, you'll notice, the new part has both a round and a slotted hole. To make sure our alignments all right, we'll put a bolt through the ground strap and through the round hole. Start that bolt by hand. We'll install a bolt into the slotted side just to make sure that it stays aligned, and tighten down the round hole first with our 10mm socket and ratchet. Reconnect the electrical connector. Pull out on the safety latch, just slide it back over the cable. Back around the latch, and reinstall your four plastic push-pins. These simply get popped in, and then you push the head back down.
