In this video we're going to be working with our 1996 GMC Sierra K1500 5.7-liter V8. We're going to show you how to install a distributor repair plate. It's very common for the screw holes in the distributor on these vehicles to blow out and prevent the cap from staying on tight, so rather than replace your entire distributor we have a repair plate that will allow you to reuse your existing one. We did this with our distributor outside of the vehicle to make it easier to show you, but this process can be done exactly the same way inside of the truck.

Here are the items you'll need for this repair: flat blade screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver
Remove the thumb screw on the top of the intake track at the throttle body. This can be done by hand or if yours is stuck you can lightly grab it with a pair of pliers and rotate it that way. Disconnect the rubber elbow on your PCV breather and loosen this hose clamp with a flat blade screwdriver. Now you could disconnect the electrical connectors, undo the air box, and remove this all as one piece if you want depending on what you're trying to get room for. However, this is all that's necessary for what we're trying to do.
Undo the boot, lift up and forward, and remove the upper intake. The distributor cap is located at the back of the engine behind the upper intake manifold. It's not uncommon for the base plates on these distributors to break. See the ear here has blown off of it and there's no way that a screw's going to hold that down or keep our timing in place or our distributor sealed. Fortunately, there's a simple solution. This distributor repair plate from 1A Auto simply slides over your old broken distributor base, it's notched to help keep time.
Then all you have to do is reinstall your distributor cap with the short screw on the front, which is the flat side. Install that into place with a Phillips head screwdriver. We'll get that started a couple of turns. Flip it over and install the long screw into the other side. Now this side's not broken, but just to show you the difference in screw lengths and how this works, you can go ahead and toss that in. Plus you're going to want to help keep this plate aligned to make sure that your distributor cap stays in place and secure.
Now your distributor is locked in to the factory position nice and tight and secure, so your timing stays correct and you keep moisture out of your distributor. Reinstall the intake boot onto the MAF sensor and tighten down the hose clamp with your flat blade screwdriver. Line up your fitting onto the throttle body. Remember this has to slide on at the front first and then be pushed down. Reinstall your PCV breather. Reinstall your thumb screw and just get that down as tight as you can by hand and you're good to go.

For those of you that have run into the GM broken distributor housings....this is worth the $$!!!!!! Some aftermarket distributors don't line up right and you end up wasting alot of time in a not fun space all because of 1 screw in a broken housing.
Buy this plate...slide it underneath and install the new screws and you're done!! No issues, no flashing check engine light due to the timing misfire.
I recommend this and I am glad that I was able to find it...I was not looking forward to replacing another distributor due to a Generous Motors flaw.
Perfect fit for a bad design from GM

I was really relieved when I found the plate to install to hold my distributor. I had both embedded screw nuts crack and was looking at the cost of replacing the whole distributor. The plate was designed to fit snuggly underneath the distributor top and the 2 longer screws were provided.
Only thing I would add is to pre-screw the screws into the plate to make it easier when putting the distributor cap on.
Cost was approximately $45.
Great money saver and easy to install

I have to give it 5 stars. I didn't even have to pull the distributor to install the repair plate. I was able to install it during my lunch break.
This distributor repair plate worked good, the only problem I found was the screw holes were not tapped for the screws and they sent sheet metal screws instead of self-tapping screws. Definitely easier than replacing the entire distributor.
