In this video, we're going to be working with our 1996 GMC Sierra K1500. We're going to show you how to remove and replace the striker latches on your vehicles tailgate. These are the ones bolted onto the body, not to be confused with the ones mounted to the tailgate.

The only item you'll need for this repair is a T40 Torx socket and a ratchet.
Open your tailgate and locate the striker for the latches—there's one on each side at the top. Release the end of the tailgate cable by pushing up, pulling out and allowing it to hang. Only do this one side at a time otherwise it'll allow your tailgate to hang down too far and potentially bend or damage it. Then remove these two T40 Torx bolts with a T40 Torx socket and ratchet.
Here we have our old striker that we removed from our truck and our new part from 1AAuto.com. As you can see these parts are exactly the same and this kit is sold as a pair. The other piece is just a mirror image of this one. These strikers can bend or break overtime from getting latched and unlatched so often and cause your tailgate to be insecure or not aligned properly and not closing fully, which is not good especially if you're carrying a loose payload in the back of the truck. Fortunately this new part from 1A Auto will go and direct fit just like your original equipment. Get your tailgate latched safely and securely and fix you up right.
Reinstall the striker and start your two bolts. Button head Torx goes at the top and the one with the channel for our tailgate cable goes at the bottom. The top is a round hole where the bottom is a slotted one to help with the alignment on various vehicles. So we'll tighten the top round hole down first to position the lower slotted one. Lift up on the tailgate. Slide the open part of the cable over the latch. Lock it back into place and carefully close your tailgate to check the alignment. Everything looks good, nice and secure. Our other one's a little sloppy so we'll repeat these steps on the opposite side.
