Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show how to replace an inside door handle, the front door handle, on this 2002 Ford Escape. It's pretty much the same procedure for any 2001 to 2004 Escape, as well as the Mercury Mariner. The only tools you'll need are a small flat blade screwdriver and a Phillips screwdriver.
To start out, use a small screwdriver, and remove this little trap door. To start out, use a little screwdriver, and there's a little trap door in here. Reach in and pry it out. There's a Phillips screw back in there. Do the same thing here. Pop that off. Remove the Phillips screw, and the Phillips screw right down in the door pull, and another Phillips screw on the back Just fast forward here as I remove those four screws.
Once you have those out, then pull your bezel around your door handle here off. Now, usually, you can reach around into this corner, start pulling out, and work your fingers underneath. Pull out the front, and this series of clips that hold the door on. There are two up in here. The door panel comes off. Basically, you have to kind of reach in underneath the front of it, and pull firmly, and then it comes out. Then, you just kind of lift your cable up, and it comes with a little bit of force, and pops right off. Your handle comes off.
Replacing the new handles is just a reverse of the procedure. You have to kind of push your lock button, push that down in, and force it down in a little bit, and it lifts up, and snaps down. Put it on the door, start it back, and it just locks back in.
First reconnect your harness. Hook the top up and over the weather strip here. Look back in here. Make sure the pins are going into the holes. Then, fast forward as I put the bezel on, and then the screws. The natural colored screw goes behind the door handle. The skinnier diameter black screw goes in the back, and then the two larger black screws go in the door pull, in the front of the door panel. Then, to finish up, make sure you just close the little trap door in behind the door handle, and put that front button trim back on.
