Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks!
In this video we're going to be working with our 2001 Ford Ranger. We're going to show you how to remove and replace the transfer case shift motor.
The transfer case motor transfers the electronic signal from the switch on your dash that allows you to select either 2 wheel, 4 high or 4 low. It relays that down to a motor that will then turn a shaft to engage the desired setting on the transfer case.
If you like this video, please click "subscribe." This information is good from 1996 to 2004 on this truck. We have a ton more videos with our Ranger and many other makes and models, and if you want this part for your vehicle, you can follow the link down in the description over to 1AAuto.com.
Here are the items you'll need for this repair: 10mm socket and ratchet.
The transfer case shift motor is located on the back side of the transfer case. We'll disconnect the electrical connector for it and allow that to hang off to the side. We'll then remove the four 10 millimeter bolts securing the shift motor to the back of the transfer case. Once the bolts are out, the transfer case shift motor should simply pop out.
Here we have our old transfer case shift motor that we removed from our truck and our new part from 1AAuto.com. As you can see, these parts are exactly the same. We have the same keyhole that slides on to the actual shifting shaft of the back of the transfer case. We have the same electrical connector here. The actual motor's bolt locations are exactly the same as well.
What can happen with these shift motors is they can fail internally or they can have an issue with the actual mechanism seizing, prevent your vehicle from shifting in our out of 4 wheel drive. This new transfer case shift motor from 1A Auto is going to go in direct fit, just like your original equipment and fix you up right.
We install the shift motor onto the back of the transfer case. The long bolts will go into the three holes here with the shortest one going to the bracket at the end. Tighten these bolts down with a 10 millimeter socket and ratchet. Reconnect the electrical connector and you're good to go.
Thanks for tuning in. We hope this video helped you out. Next time you need parts for your car, please visit 1AAuto.com. Also check out our other helpful how-to and diagnosis videos.

I don't consider myself a mechanic, but this job was super easy and probably saved me $100 if I had asked a shop to do it. Taking the old transfer motor wasn't too difficult, and the new part form 1AAuto fit perfect! Thank you you 1A Auto!!
