Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video we show you how to replace the radiator overflow bottle on this 1997 VW Jetta. Pretty much the same as any '94 to '98 Jetta. The only tools you'll need are a 10mm socket and you'll probably need a deep socket, 10mm deep socket with a ratchet and extension. You can probably get a 10mm wrench to work and you'll also need a pair of pliers.
Your radiator overflow bottle's right here on the driver's side. A lot of times these are under pressure, so this seam can give out and start leaking there. Also in hotter, drier climates the plastic can sometimes get brittle and break and it can also get, if you're careless under the hood and try and rest your hand on this or something you can break it that way.
It's pretty straight forward to get out. There are two mounting bolts. There's a little shield over here. Pull up firmly on that shield and you'll see the two mounting bolts right here. They're 10mm.Then there is a connection right there. You just squeeze the wire tabs, pull that off and you can either use pliers or your fingers. There's a clip here, squeeze that, pull it back and then you'll need to twist the hose. Once you get the hose to twist, pull that off. You'll definitely need pliers. There's a hose right down here. I'm not going to disconnect this hose because my tank's in good shape so I'm not going to replace it. Once you disconnect this hose you will, if you have fluid in the bottle, the fluid will come out down there.
A ten millimeter socket with a ratchet and extension makes it nice and easy to get to these mounting bolts. You can see, once you have it unbolted, it comes right up and out. Again, you just use a pair of pliers on this clamp, unclamp it, and twist. You can also use the pliers to kind of grab hold of the hose and twist it to get it lose. Pull that hose off and it comes out.
New ones from 1A Auto are exactly like the originals. They even are marked with the min and max. Put it back in place. Again, like I said, mine's in fine shape so I'm just showing you how to do it. We'll start the two fasteners in and tighten them up. Put this guard back on. Again, we reconnect the hose down low, reconnect this hose, squeeze this clamp with my plier fingers. That'll go back on. Put that connector back on.
