Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to remove and reinstall the front grill on this 1997, VW Jetta.
On our car, the grill is actually in fine shape, so we'll just take it off and put it back on, but you can be rest assured that if you have a broken grill, you can find a replacement at 1AAuto.com. This is a pretty easy repair once you know how to do it. The only tools you'll need are a Phillips screwdriver and a small flat blade screwdriver which will help you get the VW emblem off of it.
Okay, open up the hood. Put your hand in, pull this handle. Pop the hood, and then you reach underneath here, and you should feel a little hook that you pull to the side. Hoods up, put the rod in. There are four Phillips screws here that you're going to remove first.
Now, I'm just going to speed up as I remove those four Phillips screws. Okay, with those screws out, you can look kind of right down in and you'll see clips down there. Just use the flat blade screwdriver and push down on the clip, down on these clips, and pop those out, and you pull the top down a little bit, you can reach down in here, and there's some clips down in the bottom, and if you lift up on the grill a little bit and release this, and then the most difficult part, I can't really film it, but you want to reach in behind here, underneath your headlight, and actually if you feel with your finger, you'll feel a slot, right down here, okay? You want to reach on the back side, and there is a tab, and I'm going to slide it here, okay.
There's a tab that you push up on the back side, and that releases there, same thing on this side. Reach in here, kind of underneath the headlight, and you'll feel the tab, push up on it and release it. As you can see, it comes out. As you can see right here, these are the tabs, and that's what you're feeling for underneath. Okay, push up to release it.
Okay, you can see my grill is in good shape, so I am going to just reinstall it, but if you were putting a new grill in from 1A Auto, you would want to transfer over your VW emblem. That basically involves carefully prying out your VW emblem, if your grill is broken, really the best way to do it is to basically break the grill, and pull this out of here, but I'll show you that you can do it.
Okay, now the VW emblem comes out, and we just press the new one out of the grill, just like the original, put the top in first and then press the bottom in firmly.
Okay, to reinstall the grill, it's a matter of kind of hooking things in. You can kind of clamp your bottom clamps on first, then pry the top ones in carefully, so they're all going in and bend those back until your side ones are going in correctly.
I'm going to speed up again as I grab the four screws and the Phillips screwdriver and put them back in carefully. You want to look down in there, make sure that the screws go into the hole in the tab. They can get off course a little bit and go kind of into the slots of the tabs and sometimes break the tabs, so just make sure that you put them in correctly. When you tighten them, you don't have to tighten them too tight, just in there firm. If you make them too tight, you will break the tabs.
