The Buick Gran Sport was the name of a high performance trim model that graced several Buick vehicles throughout the late 60's early 70's. Typically, Gran Sport or GS would denote a normal vehicle from the Buick lineup that had been outfitted with the largest possible engine GM would allow. The Buick Skylark was given the Gran Sport trim upon having a 400 in³ Buick V8 engine installed for a motor. Eventually the Gran Sport branched off becoming its own model. The number designation after GS would indicate the volume of the engine i.e. a GS 400 had a 400 in³ engine. The Gran Sport quickly became a respected muscle car, something Buick is rarely associated with. In the '70 model year the Gran Sport gained a 455 in³ engine, the most powerful the GS line would receive. Also offered was the GSX appearance package, adding racing stripes, spoilers and a retuned suspension. As with nearly all other muscle cars, federal regulations killed performance and the Buick Gran Sport slowly faded.
