DSM and the Eagle Talon
Manufactured alongside the Mitsubishi Eclipse and Plymouth Laser, the Eagle Talon was a product of Diamond-Star Motors (DSM) - a joint venture between Mitsubishi and Chrysler. Founded in the mid-1980s, the Diamond-Star Plant opened in 1988 and is recognized for its construction of the Eagle Talon, Plymouth Laser, and Mitsubishi Eclipse. DSM engineered all three until Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) took over production in 1993 and manufactured the Laser until 1994, the Talon until 1998, and the Eclipse until 2012. Because they were all produced in the same plant, they were manufactured with nearly identical parts. As for the style, which was mainly designed by Chrysler, there were a few differences, leaving all three of these cars with similar interior and exterior designs.
The Eagle Talon debuted in 1990 with three trims: Talon-Base, TSi, and TSi AWD. The base came equipped with a 1.8L inline 4-cylinder engine capable of 90 horsepower, and the TSi offered a 2.0L, dual-overhead cam 4-cylinder engine that could kick 135 horsepower with optional turbo boosting horsepower to 190 for the front-wheel drive, and 195 for the all-wheel drive. The turbocharged Talon could fly, reaching 0-60mph just over seven seconds.
The Talon Soars
In 1991, the Talon offered automatic transmission for the turbo versions. Alloy wheels were included on the TSi AWD trim, and antilock brakes were installed in every model. Differences between the Talon and its counterparts were the wheels, bumpers, and style of headlights, to which all pop-up lights were removed in the following year.
As the Laser went out, the Talon soared into another generation with a stronger body. All the base models were stamped with ESi and bumped up to a 2.0L, dual-overhead cam 4-cylinder engine that pumped 140 horsepower. The TSi offered a 2.0L turbo with 210 horsepower for the manual and 205 horsepower for the automatic. An all-wheel drive version of the TSi was still available, and both higher trims offered an array of upgrades from fog lights and a rear defroster to power windows and locks. It’s been said that the Talon runs best on turbo, and as the car developed, the ESi began to lose its spunk. Rear disc brakes were removed and many of the interior qualities - like a radio and clock - were removed, as well as the spoiler on its back. However, the turbocharged Talon was not an Eagle without wings, and if anything, it improved. But these advancements weren’t enough, and the Talon was the last car to be sold off the Eagle assembly line, and the only model that could be bought from the division in 1998.
Did You Know?
The Talon dominated the SCCA World Challenge in the early 1990’s. In 1992, the Archer brothers and their team broke records by winning first place in every event with the Talon. They won championships for five consecutive years on all types of the Talon models.
