Setting Out on an Expedition
When production for the Bronco ended in 1996, Ford revealed the Expedition as its successor for the 1997 model year. Seen as a great alternative to its GM competitors due to its unique size, the Expedition came in two trim levels (XLT and the Eddie Bauer edition) on the Ford F-150 chassis. In fact, it was the last Ford SUV to be built on a truck chassis. It came with a 4.6-liter, 215 horsepower or 5.4-liter, 230 horsepower V8 engine and an optional third row.
The new SUV featured much more space for seating and storage than the Bronco, and carried plenty of amenities like a power moon roof, heated side view mirrors, and climate control, among others. If the buyer wanted, they could make their Expedition feel like an upscale SUV. Not many changes occurred over the first generation. A facelift in 1999 modernized its appearance with a lowered grille and a redesigned front bumper. The engines both saw an increase in output.
The second generation brought a new redesign for the 2003 model year with two new trim levels, the XLT Premium and Off-Road, that bumped the selection up to four. The new Expedition was the first SUV to feature fully independent suspension – front and rear. Many buyers worried that the Expedition would lose its towing and payload capacity with the loss of its live rear axle, but it turned out to be the complete opposite. The steering, suspension, and braking systems were also much improved. The cherry on top was an increase in both engine efficiency and performance with an all-new design that reduced weight and increased output. The third row also went from optional to standard.
The redesign made the Expedition a great family vehicle that could store a lot of cargo with exceptional handling to go with it. Eventually the 5.4-liter with 260 horsepower became standard, and Ford later bumped the horsepower up to 300. Two new trim levels (the upscale King Ranch edition and the FX4 off-roading package) were also available with the engine upgrade.
Continuing the Expedition
The current generation was released in 2007. It was redesigned on an all-new chassis known as the T platform. The interior and exterior also saw an all-new boxy design resembling that of the F-150 for a tougher look. It wasn’t just a tougher look, though. If you needed it to be, the Expedition could be tough, with its 9,200 pound towing capacity and off-road capabilities. Over the years, the most changes were mechanical and the cosmetics didn’t change much — but they didn’t need to, as trim packages were in abundance. Some of the packages were eventually dropped, and today the Expedition offers the XLT, XLTEL, the Limited, Limited EL, King Ranch, Platinum, King Ranch EL, and the Platinum EL. While many competing SUVs are converting to crossovers, the Expedition is a bit of an old school SUV, which makes it a nice option for those looking for a bit of that nostalgic feel.
