Little Jimmy
In 1983, General Motors introduced two small SUVs to accompany their full-sized Blazer and Jimmy. Where the full-sized SUVs were built on the C/K pickup truck platform, the new, smaller SUVs were built on the S10/S15 compact pickup platform. They were thus known as the Chevy Blazer S10 and the GMC Jimmy S15. Chevy’s version was more utilitarian, while GMC’s was a bit more upscale. Both were styled after their bigger counterparts.
At first the Jimmy was only available as a two door model, but a four dour version was introduced in 1990. The four-door had a slightly longer wheel base than the two-door version. The early model years came with a 2.0L inline-four cylinder engine standard or an optional 2.8L V6. In 1990, the 2.8L was dropped in favor of a 4.3L in order to compete with the bigger engine introduced by the Jimmy’s competitor the Jeep Cherokee. GMC stopped producing the full-size Jimmy in 1991 so the following year “S15” was dropped from the name of the smaller Jimmy, although it was still built on the S15 platform. Also in 1992, an electronic transfer case was introduced as an option on four wheel drive models.
The Next Generation Jimmy
In 1995, the Jimmy was redesigned, along with the S15 pickup (now called the Sonoma). The new Jimmy kept the 4.3L V6 and made the electronic transfer case standard on 4WD models. The manual transfer case was available as an option until 1997.
In 1998, GMC introduced the Envoy as a trim for the Jimmy. The Envoy included High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights, heated mirrors and seats, and a Bose sound system. In 2000, GMC introduced a Diamond Edition Jimmy to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Jimmy nameplate (including the full size model). The Diamond Edition included chrome running boards, a grille guard, and diamond-patterned leather seats.
GMC stopped selling the Jimmy in the United States in 2001, but continued to sell it in Canada until 2005. The Jimmy was replaced by the GMC Envoy.
